When was released, it was promoted as a rock soap opera based around a story which was originally intended to have been told through the various interludes on the album. Most of these were deleted by the time of release.
A story is also told on the'3 Chains O' Gold' video release and again in the comic book, 'Prince and the New Power Generation: Three Chains O' Gold'. . ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

Hey, wasn't Prince involved in an opera called Ulysses at some point around the time of the Love Symbol album, and 3 Chains of Gold was one of the tracks to make it onto the Love Symbol album??

Following the release of , Prince was considering other projects. Firstly, he met up with David Henry Hwang to discuss a possible musical play based on songs shared with Hwang, and around which a story, for which Prince had an outline, could be built. Hwang worked on this but, aside from a later publication and his lyrics on 'Solo', his contribution to the project never materialised on stage. Secondly, he then provided the music for 'Glam Slam Ullyses', a musical dance production which launched in 1993. The songs later emereged, sometimes reworked, and mostly on 'Come'. . Prince would b great in a Opera. He's a Bass.... Usally the Bass voices r the wicked character.... He could playing the part of the Commendator of the Don Giovanni "repent, repent now...I have no more time" with his deep low voice....
He could be Sarastro in "the magic flute" always by Mozart....
