Does Prince really have that big of a fan base in England?

At the press conference he said he did, but does he really? English peeps?

The UK has always had a strong fanbase, but it shrank a lot in the 90s due to Prince's drop in commercial success and the all prince stuff.

Since these are the only dates in EUROPE and they're sticking to London only, I assume they're banking on European fans and concert goers making the trip across the channel, because 21 nights is a helluvah lot of bums on seats for someone like Prince, in the UK.

Maybe Prince will follow it up with 7 nights in Scotland!

I think the UK and Holland are his strongest fanbases, but his popularity certainly has declined a lot. 3121, while a Top 10 hit in the UK, in its firast week of release, fell out of the Top 30 in its second week. I assume he'll be able to fill the O2 arena for at least two or maybe three nights, but I'm not sure he'll sell out the whole run. Mind you, at £31.21 a ticket, those prices are very cheap compared to the £150 The Rolling Stones are charging, so he may get the nostalgniks who last bought a Prince album in 1992 coming to see him.

No, he does not.

I think this whole thing is very, very optimistic. I think he could do a few arena dates but they would have to be spread across the country, say 2 in London and 1 each in Birmingham and Manchester. This O2 arena is going to be about a 17 to 23 thousand capacity, no chance they'll get any where near selling all 7 out. The club dates would be amazing to go to though. I think if he wanted to make an impression again over here he should play Glastonbury, yeah that old nugget!

I possibly only speak for myself but the fact that London is getting yet another set of events is just sickening to me.

He has the whole of Europe to come see him, not just the UK.

There were quite a few Europeans who came out to Las Vegas to see him. If they'll travel to the US, they'll certainly travel to London.

Plus fans indeed do go to 'multiple gigs' which he has cleverly ensured is possible by only charging £31.21.

I was only planning to attend 2 at most. Due to the low price I'll be attending 4 main gigs with the hope of geting in a club gig at some point during the 21 days. Because of the price I'm able to take my Mum for the first time. Plus my Wife will be attending and my sister and partner are all going. These are not major Prince fans per se, but like him and want to see him live and are happy to at these prices.

Plus, what the hell else can you go out to in London and see for thirty quid? I think he'll get people going who are just vaguely interested and want a good night out, just because the prices are so low.

I think these events will sell right up to the performance dates.

If this is promoted right they could sell pretty fast, but this will rely on the advertising being more than this press conference and a few adverts in the sunday papers.

Even if all the hardcore fans to go to 2 or 3 shows, it will not be enough. Even though everyone I've told (non-Prince fans) wants to go too, it's a tall order to sell all those tickets.

I'm not slagging Prince off here, just don't want to see him with egg on his face

Not so many years ago, the same could be asked of the US, then a few more years down the line he does Musicology, and look what happened. I'm not sure it really matters how much of a fanbase he has over here, it's about getting the curious and casual listeners, just music fans in general, to attend. Word soon gets about. Before you know it, he'll be extending the amount of shows at the dome.

Gah, if I trek all the way down to London for the shows and then find out he's playing Scotland after all, I won't be happy!

You drum up enough media interest - people will come.

My brother who lost interest in Prince during the whole 'change name thing' called me yesterday saying he saw the press conference on tv and that he wants to get tickets for him and his girlfriend. Wanted to know how to get the best seating.

He'll end up getting better seats than me i know it. And that fucking hurts! sad

Those doubting Prince's appeal in London remember this:

In early 2004 we had A LOT of naysayers around here saying that Prince was crazy to think he was popular enough in the USA to be able to justify doing large arena concerts on his "musicology" tour.

Well, Prince went on to have the biggest selling tour of that year and his biggest wave of popularity since 1991.

If the British media is properly motivated and stimulated this thing could be to the British masses what Musicology was to the USA...he rediscovering of Prince.

Yeah, at this moment in time i'd say no. But as you say, there's the potential's there if he can play the game and get the media on board.

listen london is in the top 3 largest cities in the world, with a population of 15million, its like an hour from Paris , also a major European city and of course he is also popular throughout europe, and the rest of the UK. Promotion is all this needs, the ticket prices are soo low, plus the British people spend a hell of a lot more on music and concerts and theatre than the Americans so he wont have a problem here.

The British media will not promote Prince, they will do articles to poke fun of him from time to time and that's it. They are ignorant of true talent and greatness and consider the likes of ex-big brother people and footballers' wifes to be more worthy of coverage.

Was there, in Britain, the same press reaction to Prince playing the Brits as there was to him doing the Grammys in the US? It didn't seem that way. He got great support in the US for the tour, and rightly so, because of how that Grammy performance went down!

I also think that there is not enough nostalga atached to Prince as there was/is for stuff like, for example Duran Duran. Do you ever see any tribute Prince acts in the UK? Do you ever hear his songs on the radio?

Prince possibly could do an arena bassed tour but with far fewer dates and more destinations (like Manchester ffs!!!)

I can imagine that he'll draw people in from all over Europe. It is the first time in a while that he has done public concerts in that area of the world, so I'm sure a lot of people will be anxious to see him.

I have to admit that happy though I am that he's here (it'll be my first time seeing him) i'm worried about people who have only ever had a passing interest getting all the tickets. Selfish I know but a friend suddenly wants tickets even though just the other day I had to explain he changed back from prince years ago!

Nothing against new fans, but only if i have better seats smile
