she's been on the scene almost as long. she writes her own music... can play more than one instrument and took on her record company (Motown Records). She might not be as versatile as Prince, but I think she comes closest. That woman can play the hell out of a guitar and SANG her ass off. Also, her first album Wild and Peaceful like Prince's For You, while incredibly entertaining is a very slick, overproduced affair. Yet, also like Prince she soaked up everything like a sponge and worked to perfect her craft by insisting on writing and producing her own songs. She also had similar battles with Motown, like the one that Prince had with Warner Brothers. That "comebacks" were even parallel, with her success with La Dona and Prince's success with Musicology being about a year apart.

I'm going to have to find her music. Until then, it's Teena for me too. I saw her at the same concert I first saw Prince. Then I saw her years later at the House of Blues in Chicago. She blew me away with her 4'11" self. You go girl... #
Is there really a law named after Teena? # As a result of the Motown lawsuit, there was a "Teena Marie Bill" passed by US Congress which is still in legislation today to protect artists' rights. The bill states that a label cannot legally keep an artist contractually bound if they refuse to release their records. When Teena sued Motown they refused to pay her any more royalties. She won her case and now if an artist has a dispute with the record company, the company must by law continue to pay the artist until the matter is resolved. She sold millions with Motown and was broke. That's why she went to Epic. She helped to make it easier for artists to get paid for their work.Teena Marie is a Diva. Never forget. | |
