Exodus vs. New Power Soul I've listed these 2 albums for a reason. They are the 2 albums(that I know of) listed under the NPG name. So, which one is better? To me and to probably most of you it's hands down Exodus. True, New Power Soul may have been more commercial and most Prince fans have bought it or listened to it in some matter. It does have it strong points don't get me wrong but it lacks that umph! Exodus on the other hand was like in your face hard and had that pow! I like New Power Soul and don't regret buying it but up against Exodus, it falls behind a lot. Some of my fave tracks on this is some of the hardest and funkiest stuff you've heard Prince or anybody else put out in awhile. "Get Wild", "The Good Life", "Return of The Bump Squad", and the title track is definitely banging. All hail Exodus. Welcome 2 the dawn. Peace and be wild!

I pick Exodus. This cd is always in my cd changer in my car, while NPS is always sitting on a shelf in my house because I rarely listen to it. Exodus is too funky!

I love Exodus too, it's just surreal. Although New Power Soul has some good tracks, it just never grew on me.

Exodus, it's not even a fair comparison. Even though Prince is less prominent vocally on Exodus, it's a far superior album. In fact,I'm gonna play it now. RIP

Goldnigga comes under the NPG banner too. RIP

As has already been mentioned, there are 3 NPG albums...
Goldnigga Exodus Newpower Soul And I'd agree that Exodus is easily the best one (though it would've benefitted from having less segues on it to be honest)

I don't even own Exodus or Goldnigga, so I guess I have to go with NPS.

i'm a heretic, i know, but i choose NPS.
i like the VIBE of exodus...a LOT...but i absolutely HATE segues, i'm not terribly thrilled with the majority of the album not being sung by prince (i didn't expect it to be, but i'm just being honest...it didn't work for me), and there's a lot of stuff that just meanders on this album. i don't HATE it - it just doesn't really grab me, other than maybe two or three songs. as for NPS, when the songs are good, they are ON FIRE....and when they're bad, OH MY GOD they're bad. but there are four songs from this album i can think of right off hand that i don't only like but LOVE - and i can't dismiss this as a rotten album if something like "come on" or "the one" is on it. if the underground/funkadelic asthetic of exodus were applied to NPS (and it looks like they tried, but no cigar), i'd be a lot happier with it.

Wow! I've never heard of Goldnigga. I didn't know there was a third NPG album. So, can you tell me how I can acquire this cd or who might have it in the Detroit area. Thanks! Peace and be wild!

Goldnigga was the first NPG album. There were two cofigurations. One had 16 tracks, the latter had 15 tracks due to copyright issues with the song "Guess Who's Knockin'". Both are pretty expensive since they are out of print, and were pressed on a smaller scale. There are plenty of counterfeits out there, so check Housequake for the low down on what to look for. There was also a CD-Maxi of 2Gether from Goldnigga. Some counterfeit copies include this set of remixes. http://www.housequake.com...755-1.html . If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

If I'm not mistaken, the Larry Graham album and the Chaka Khan album were also on the NPG label. I'd have to check when I get home, but I think they were. I seem to remember that 1-800-newfunk and Mayte's album were also NPG records, but I don't have them here to check.
Now for the best of the NPG label... I guess it depends on what you mean by best... The best songs, collection, funk, most energetic and most fun? Exodus (possibly his best album of the 90s) The best CD to be used as a coaster? NPS (easy answer) Hope that answers the question. You aren't missing too much. It was Tony M's vehicle with him rapping on every song but does have some nice beats and a few decent songs. I'd try to download it and avoid paying money..

Yeah, if you don't like Tony M then Goldnigga will make you hurl. But, that being said, there are some FAT-ASS FUNKY JAMS all over it. I'm glad I got mine and for pretty cheap too. It even had "Guess Who's Knocking" on it. The girl who sold it to me had NO IDEA of the going rate for those rare copies with that deleted track included. ..... Just say "NO" to cow mucus consumption!

[Edited 5/8/07 11:45am] OK, now I've checked it out and here is the list I can gather (with help from wikipedia) of NPG releases: New Power Generation, Goldnigga, 1993 Various Artists, 1-800-NEW-FUNK, 1994 (distributed by Bellmark/Life Records) New Power Generation, Exodus, 1995 The Gold Experience, 1995 (distributed by Warner Bros. Records) Mayte, Child of the Sun, 1995 Emancipation, 1996 (distributed by EMI) Crystal Ball, 1998 The Truth, 1998 The NPG Orchestra, Kamasutra, 1998 Chaka Khan, Come 2 My House, 1998 New Power Generation, Newpower Soul, 1998 Larry Graham, Graham Central Station 2000, 1999 as , Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic, 1999 (distributed by Arista Records) Prince, The Rainbow Children, 2001 (distributed by Redline Entertainment) Prince, One Nite Alone... Live!, 2002 (distributed by Big Daddy Music Distribution) Prince, N.E.W.S, 2003 (distributed by Big Daddy Music Distribution) Prince, Musicology, 2004 (distributed by Columbia Records) Prince, 3121, 2006 (distributed by Universal Records) That is quite a list of NPG albums! I still like Exodus probably the best, with Crystal Ball nipping on it's heels for 2nd. Generation" rather than the record label.

New Power Soul consists of songs written during the Exodus era -- but released AFTER prince became lame due to Larry Graham.
If you notice the back of NPS CD cover, NPS was supposed to contain "the Good life - big city remix" on the ablum, but it was cut out because it contained dirty lyrics. The whole album sounds like someone threw water all over exodus's production and got this slick, clean, lame version.

The whole album sounds like someone threw water all over exodus's production and got this slick, clean, lame version. Not true, 'Newpower Soul' contained mostly newly recorded tracks. It's true however that Prince had intended to follow up the release of Exodus almost immediately with an album entitled 'New Power Soul', which would've contained a lot of songs written around the same time (tracks like 'It Takes 3', 'Funky Design' and 'Acknowledge Me'), but aside from the title, the album bore no resemblance to the released 'Newpower Soul' album.

I'd have to go with NPS. It's horribly uneven but The One is my favorite of Prince's ballads. Exodus has a great feel to it and some tracks that sound like they could have been great but without Prince handling the lead they just don't work... and the segues are embarrassing.

I own both, but rarely listen to either. However, I guess I'd pick NPS of the 2. My favorite track on that album is Shoo-Bed-Ooh, and Wasted Kisses as well. Have to admit though, some comments here have me thinking about pulling out Exodus for the first time in many years. Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"
They've taken a lifetime lease on Paisley Park ...
