A reliable Prince biography of the early years

(reposted in the correct forum).

I want a biography book that really gives the low down of that time in Prince's career, because there were so many comings and goings in the Prince camp during this time.
Dez, Andre, BrownMark, Vanity, Jam, Lewis, Monte, Jesse, Gail

What is a good biography that goes into Prince career 1980 - 1988

There's a fantastic book called DMSR by Per Nilson (I think this is the author's name but I could be wrong), I've read it twice! It gives alll the low down on that period.

^ that one is good, but imo if you can find it, read Dave Hill's, Prince: a Pop Life, 1989. Excellant book! Many of the newer books take from this one.

It's not a Prince biography, but I'm sure Dez's book has some good stuff in it.

Yeah, I agree with that. Well written and pretty well balanced.

I read Dez Dickerson's book and I thought it was great. It really takes you back to that time...in fact it is all about the early years because that is when he worked with Prince. So if the early years are your favorite time it really shows what it was like to work with Prince as what it was like being a working musician at that time. biggrin

You used to be able to buy Dez's book on Ebay. I got one and he autographs them.

Thanks biggrin ,just ordered it through his website...I'm a book worm generally, so I can't believe I didn't know that was out. However, looks like its from 2003- which is when my son was born. I wasn't online much that year.

That is undersandable. Children are a full-time job.Props to mothers!! biggrin cool
You will love the book...the way Dez wrote it was just writing his memior he clearly says he wasn't trying to be a great insightful author or anything but ironicaly he was just I believe because he just really stayed honest and true about his thoughts and feelings at that time, which translated into a work of lit that trasported you to a certain time with all these characters and events which is what a great book does! It wasn't trashy or exploitive ...and the way the experience made him develop into the great person he seems to be is evident by the great, mature outlook he has about his life which is apparent in the writing.

Hey thanks everyone.
I am going to get Per Nielsen's book because I have heard so much about it.
I am also going to check out Prince: a Pop life because it is so highly recommended.

now about Dez's book... did he do a rag job because he was jealous, or made about his departure from Prince camp.

I have not read a book by an associate because I don't want to read something from someone who has a ax to grind...

So is Dez's book reliable??

Dez's book is very well balanced and mature..and In no way does it come off as anything other than his side of the story..dont forget he was still in Purple rain *the movie..even though he was gone since the 1999days...Its a good read.

Got this one and Purple Reign
fun read but not very revealing of who left Prince and when... the behind the scene types of things.
I have heard about the riff between Jesse and Prince... and the way Prince would erase certain solos that Jesse had recorded, then do his own. So when Jesse left there was some bad blood. I heard all of this here on the org.
I have also heard Cymone left pissed as well. I would like to know why BrownMark left, Dez etc.
I thought there might be a book that told the story. Somehow people on the Org know... but I doubt they had any contacts in the Prince camp... so they must have read it some place.
