The "For You" Album: Opinions?

Since I'm facing this dramatic event (click on the link, I only have tis album on the HD of the laptop...

It's so dreamy and cute!

I think it's a great album front to back.

A bit raw, a bit whimsical and devoid of all of the tricks Prince would pull out in the future, I still think it stands up well as a first album. Prince, of course, went on to bigger and better (in most people's opinions) records, but I really think For You should be appreciated more and discussed more. This is where it all began.

Crazy You, In Love, Just As Long As We're Together, I'm Yours are my favorite songs.

I love the album, too. I love it because he's obviously so young and trying so hard to make everything perfect. It's a little too smooth and overproduced (shades of things to come), but it's a great snapshot of what music was like in the late 70s -- and who Prince was in relation to that.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Best album by Prince!

It's quite hard to defend this statement, but I'll try. It's an ALBUM, from A to Z. It doesn't have any real lowpoints. There isn't a track that has to be skipped. And it's definitely Prince, it's all there, soul, funk and rock.

I love the beginning, a cappela, great way to present yourself. He should try this more (even though sSlo wasn't that great, especially in the flow of the album). "All of this and more, is for you": Great opening.

Crazy you is perfect, the waterdrop drums, gentle guitar, sweet! Just as long, just as the alternate version, great groove.

I heart For You. I listen to it all the time. My favorites are My Love is Forever, Just as Long as We're Together, In Love, and I'm Yours.

That just might be the only drawback, it doesn't show what's to come. No hint of the bold synths or stripped grooves.

I think it's a solid album from beginning to end and really justifies all the hype around him at the time. The Prince album may have been more commercial and accessible but this one seems to have more sweat and tears in it.

I love this album! I love the gorgeous acapella opener. I love the 70's sound. I love that Prince was fresh, innocent, and naughty all at the same time. I love that it had awesome dance tunes, as well as sweet ballads. It's really a great album. I am sad that I didn't pick it up sooner.

A great album. I waited long to get it and - and what a surprise! I do love early Prince, his first two albums have a special place in my heart (ok, as does the rest wink

I see it as a very strong album without any lowpoints. Though it does not completely match the Prince album for me (hehe, no Bambi).

I love Baby, So Blue and esp. Crazy You, which I think is simply beautiful.

Hey ppl give "In Love" some love smile
For You was the second Prince album I bought on cassette in '88 and I had no idea what it was about till I heard it.
Its just a pure discothon, good vibe, dancing album but"In Love"just makes me wanna dance and smile everytime I hear it plus the added bonus of Prince sounding so sweet and innocent through-out.
A class album and hard 2 believe apparently Rolling Stone magazine once voted it in the top 5 of the worst debut albums by a major player.Sheeeeesh!!!!!

It's a quality album from start to finish. For someone of only 19 to produce something like that, they have to be exceptionally skilled!

seriously!
Prince did an awesome job -- it was totally his baby from beginning to end, and to have done so well, more power to him! and it came, and he conquered.

I bought the tape in 84 and just upgraded to CD last year. I love the intro...He sounds like a choir of angels. I really think his voice carries this album until you realize he's doing all the instruments too!!!!!

I totally disagree eek wink . I've always thought that "Prince" actually feels like a proper debut in a major label, while "For You" sounds like a cheap demo EP released by an independent label lol But I like the album, though.

I love it. It was an album I listened to a lot when I first bought it in 1985.I bought it same day as ATWIAD came out and bought Prince and Dirty Mind on the same day. To be able to buy 4 such albums for the first time all in one day...WOW what a memory, what a Day ( and months that followed digesting them).

That was my birthday money gone but completed the Prince collection ( I'd bought 1999 and Controversy soon after PR).

Listening to For You now, I still think it's a great debut. I always loved So Blue and Crazy You..well I loved the whole album. happy days, lol.
