Simple question: what was the last album that really made a great impression on you? For me it was:

The last album that made a big impact was a long time ago. It would probably be emancipation or come.
Individual songs, I remember really being blown away by Dear Mr Man, I actually had to pull over when it came on the radio (the album hadn't been released yet). And the song Rainbow children. I couldn't believe the sound he had, I had to play the first minute again and again to make sure I heard it right.

I would have to say one of his 1996 albums. Maybe Emancipation. Yeah, I'll say Emancipation.
After that I just thought Prince was too busy trying to be a pop star and not really wanting to push the envelope further. I would've said "Rainbow Children" since ithas some of the best music he's done, but the themes and stuff kinda marr its chances of becoming great. 3121 believe it or not. Before that probably The Chocolate Invasion. I listen to that "album" more than I listen to most of his stuff.

Only really got into it a few years ago ME TOO! I love that album, now. Maybe because at the time it seemed similar to what was coming out by others to an extent, the "techno" vibe, etc. Now it sounds more unique. I don't know... In terms of order of actual release, I'll have to say The Truth. Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"
They've taken a lifetime lease on Paisley Park ...

Easy answer.
The Exodus has begun. A great, and yet often overlooked, collection of tracks. Really worth seeking out for those of you who don't have it. The 10 minute long title track is his funkiest song of the decade. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. It was The Rainbow Children for me too but actually over time I've grown
to appreciate it a bit less than I did initially , so maybe the originality of the album gave a false impression as to how good I really would think it was over time . Check out Chocadelica , updated with Lotusflow3r and MPLSound album lyrics April 2nd 2009 :
