The most overrated and the most underrated Prince album?: name them

Most overrated:

The Rainbow Children (halfbaken jazz-rock, brainwashed lyrics, i really dont understand real 'fans' who say this is a great record...they don't get IT)

Most underrated:

Diamonds and Pearls (No, its not Prince the 'freaky' innovator from the eighties, but when it comes to songwriting skills, creating an overall enjoyable album, this is one of his Top 5 albums)

Allright, Vainandy.

I have seen you here so many times 'slaughtering' the Parade album.

But please try to convince me how an album like controversy, filled with a way too long, selfobserved ballad like Do me baby, a painfully awkward attempt at punk-rock called 'Ronnie, talk to Russia' (with awfull lyrics) and Prince-by-the-numbers tracks like Lets Work and Jack U off, can compete with an ambivalent, subtle exercise in art like Parade?

Good luck with it.

Going by sales, and my own opinion...

Underrated: The Vault-Old Friends 4 Sale
Overrated: Musicology
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Nice choices, squirelgrease,

The vault: old friends 4 sale is (excluding the way too formulaic ballad 'extraordinary) a fresh, loose album showing that Prince was trying new things with the NPG around that time: a more loose, jazzy, soulfull sound.

That's the problem with it, "art" or in other words, "artsy/fartsy". The hell with that shit. Make hard funk and rock ONLY, leave the nerdy classical shit to Lawrence Welk.

You think the guitar solo was too long? One of my old co-workers said that was the only thing about PR he didn't like.

these type of questions are tough since I always want to list more than one...So.... wink

overrated- Lovesexy (excempting Anna Stesia), D&P, and TRC

underrated- 78-81 all of them, AND, C&D boxed.
JMO! (and I may change my mind at any time biggrin)

Overrated:
Commercially - Purple Rain (Yeah, yeah, but 1999 or SOTT should have had those sales)
Fanbase - The Rainbow Children (egads...)

Underrated:
Commercially - prince (should have been loads of hits off that one)
fanbase - Come and C&D (These get tossed aside in the politics of 'contractual obligation' wayyy too much when it's obvious Prince really liked some of that music originally)

over-rated: The Gold Experience (Purple Rain part two my ass)
under-rated: Chaos and Disorder (aside from the ragga and rap shit, a really good, short and to the point rocker)

^ hell i agree, overrated: SOTT - too uneven to be justly considered the masterpiece. it's got some of his best things ever (title track, duh), but some of the weaker stuff alongside (play in the sunshine). shouldn't have been a double.

my underrated? The Truth - i don't see it talked about too often and it's a shame, coz it's one hell of an album sporting amazing songwriting and cool laid-back 'tude.
new to funk, naive in every way

Overrated- easily "Musicology"- it may have been his "comeback" but a very weak album

Underrated- "The Gold Experience"-should have been a monster seller, mishandled by Prince and the music label.
