Does Listening to "Purple Rain" make you sad/emotional?

I'm sitting here listening to "Purple Rain" and it is making me really emotional. I think it is one of the most beautiful songs EVER written. Something about it, makes me long for being a child. It makes me think about the people I've hurt and disappointed in my life. I realize the song is a staple for Prince fanatics, and the casual listening, fans. However, I think to say, "It is a hit" takes away something from it. It almost cheapens it. The song is fuckin' powerful. Am I the only person who gets a little misty eyed when I hear "Purple Rain?" hmmm

I get misty eyed whenever I watch him do it in the movie, especially what he's just been through.

Not when I listen to it, though.

I do feel really bad for Prince cuz he sounds so sad in the song... the "sing-along" chorus and that last guitar solo make it sound like he's crying.

Me, not so much.

I can listen to the song (and the album) w/o the urge to see the movie... cuz I don't own it, heh

But whenever I listen thru the album, I think of where each song occurs in the movie & such.

Yes, I get a real emotional high when I hear it. Especially when they play the long play version on the radio.

I've gotten emotional from the song before. The song is powerful from the first note to the last string. Seeing him do it live just takes the song to an even higher high.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

that sounds so cool...

one of these days I should really listen to it. I feel like sometimes I lose focus cuz the song's so long. But I think I should just clear my head, lay down with my headphones on and fall into the world it creates. I might find a new meaning for it besides the sad web it already weaves in my head.

my favorite version is a nearly 19-minute live version with the revolution from the purple rain tour. sometimes, when the mood strikes, i put it on repeat on my itunes at work. throughout the day different bits -- either guitar strokes or specific lines -- catch my mind. ah, i love my "purple rain days".

wow... ~19 minutes?

Someone sent me a performance video from 1st avenue (the performance ultimately used for the album's recording)... and that was 16 minutes... then again, it's less than that, cuz there's 2-4 minutes of just cheering...
It's interesting hearing the progression with the "deleted verse"... but that was a smart move on his part to take it out for the album version.

Hell NO! Reminds me of when I was in my 20's having fun. The movie came out. A local band played "When Doves Fly".....The whole albume is good feelings. I associate the music with what I was doing at the time. Of course this was a while back. When I was single. Partying. The albume/song would've never been a hit in those days if it were considered a "downer".
Even in hindsight, no way. Prince was a phenomenon. No sadness about anything he did.....he was a breathe of fresh air.

edit for spelling..

When he plays it at the piano alone in the movie i do. I love the synth chord that plays just before he hits 'play' on the tape recorder

And also, bag in the day when he would scream, and i mean scream (not the fake ass screaams he does now) the line "honey i know, i know, I know times are changing"

WOW.

Yeah, it's gotten me emotional before; this and The Beautiful Ones (the latter almost bringing me to tears one time). Reminds me of someone I loved dearly who one day shunned me and dissapeared with no explanation.
