Does "The Artist" and "his" work warrant a greatest hits compilation?

No need to start throwing darts, but prince's output wasn't, ummm, how do you say, great. I mean he could prolly have a "best of", but on the real, you can't call it a hits collection, can you?

I'm tryna think how to best fill out one cd worth of material. I know alot of you already have a comp you made and may think this blasphemous, but let's keep it real folks.

The Most Beautiful Girl In The World (prolly prince's biggest song)
The Greatest Romance Ever Sold
One Of Us (cover)
Betcha By Golly Wow (cover)
P Control (decent club hit)
Gold (I still don't get it confuse)
Come On (credited to NPG)
The One (see above)
Somebody's Somebody (that's my song)
Dinner With Delores (eh)
The Holy River (don't think many folks outside the "Fam" know what this is)
1999:The New Master (sorry, couldn't resist)

... that's only 12 songs. I'm SURE there are more, but you get the point.

Would you buy a prince comp?

I think his output during the prince was pretty darn great. It all just depends on what you like.

It couldn't be a "Greatest Hits" collection necessarily, and I wouldn't approach it from that POV, but it could be a 'retrospective of the era'... There's plenty of music to pick from.

sure you are.

It could be done, but I don't think it's necessary.

Well, there are penty of Prince comps that aren't necessary, but I was wondering if there are other songs I can't remember and/or there's an interest.

This era is loaded with great music....just call it a "best of" instead of a "greatest hits" and it's all good.

However, I would NEVER buy any "greatest hits" or "best of" from any era unless it had some unique tracks to offer. Just "remastered" rehash of the same old mixes is not good enough.

Of course he could!

Especially compared to half these other 'artists' and 3-hit wonders who release 15 track Best Ofs, 7 of which are remixes.

wow... good question.

Based on what I've heard, I can only come up with the following:

TMBGITW
Dolphin
Gold
Shh
Come
Letitgo
TGRES
Eye Hate U
Acknowledge Me (Ive only heard it once, but I liked it)

giggle give me more time, though. I only own 2 albums of prince

But here's a question, would this include material from the album prince?

I can't compare the material and say its better or worse than Prince's material from past & present... it's just different.

Come, Space and Letitgo are mentioned, but are 'Prince' songs.

While maybe not as great as a Prince collection would be, it's easy to make a pretty amazing collection of 0(+> songs. How about this?

01- The most beautiful girl in the world
    02- Dolphin
    03- I hate U
    04- Gold
    (The Gold Experience)

    05- Dinner with Delores
    06- Same December
    07- Into the light
    08- I will
    (Chaos & Disorder)

    09- Jam of the year
    10- Sex in the summer
    11- Soul sanctuary
    12- The holy river

    13- Face down
    14- Sleep around
    15- My computer
    16- One of us
    (Emancipation)

    17- The Truth
    18- 3rd Eye
    19- Comeback
    20- Welcome 2 the dawn
    (The Truth)

    21- New Power Soul
    22- Come on
    23- The One
    24- Wasted Kisses
    (New Power Soul)

    25- Love sign
    26- Calhoun square
    27- Days of wild
    28- Goodbye
    (Crystal ball)

29- The greatest romance ever sold
30- The sun, the moon and stars
    31- Baby knows
    32- Wherever u go, whatever u do
    (Rave un2 the joy fantastic)

Definitely not bad I would say. smile

Thanks. I thought so.

But to answer yer other question, no, that wouldn't include the symbol album. Nice try. It IS different. cool

It brings up an interesting point, though... How would Prince look at the prince album... Did he have any idea he would adopt that name while producing the album, I wonder. The "7" video seems an important factor with him killing off several different versions of himself.

When prince becomes a part of my growing collection, I'll definitely give that plenty of thought.

Although "Come" as a whole didn't jump out at me, bits and pieces did. The title track itself is plain innovative and "out there". And the instrumentals that were used in the album were unlike anything I've heard before... therein lies another mystery I'll have to solve.

That's where the comment I'd made previously - about it being more experimental and edgy - comes in to play. Combine that with the more personal POV of most of the songs and it becomes a rather intimate, almost private, album that really needs time to be appreciated.

It makes it a rather effective end to his time as "Prince" on the WB label, too... because everything after that certainly trends toward a more open and commercial sound during the prince era.
