The One is Glorious

I just Love the song the one. It's an amazing and very underrated song.

I remember reading a review of the NPS album that called it a pale imatation of Prince at the height of his powers.

I totally love this song, and he did such a beautiful performance of this during the Musicology tour. His voice is absolutely amazing.

I said that comment about the song.. "If I Was Your Girlfriend" .. cause there is nothing a woman wouldnt do for a man.. if the dude spoke 'THAT' type language to a woman.. whew!

and "The One" video.. I thought Prince was @ the height of his happiness with Mayte .. i still say she's the only one for him ..

The reality of this is that "The One" video probably came after their relationship was falling apart, much like they filmed the Betcha By Golly Wow! video with a supposedly Pregnant Mayte WEEKS AFTER the baby had already been born and died.

Oh, and I love the song. I think it's probably my favorite Prince ballad.

I think it is one of P's most underrated ballads. I especially love the remix with Chante Moore. That version is just HAWT!!!

Although Mayte was in the video, I assumed it was inspired by his "courting" of Mani. Since he thanks her in the credits of the New Power Soul album on which it appears. It just sounds more like a man getting his mack on than one in the midst of a relationship. But who knows.

That's the best song off of NPS and one of my favorite Prince ballads. I wish more people heard it cause it still deserves to be big.

It's pretty good. I think it gets a bit overrated just because it and Come On & Wasted kisses are beacons of hope in a sea of vomit.

You´re right about the timing ( relationship with Mayte falling apart, Mani steps on the scene and is credited in the liner notes ) BUT...why would he mention Mayte´s name if the song wasn´t written for her ? Listen closely again, he sings her name towards the end of the song.

Ehh...if that is the case, why did they make a second , edited version of the video ?

I still don't get it why he made that video after the fact that his son died. That seemed awfully cruel to me and made me question his sanity. And why wpuld Mayte go along with that? I assume she was totally controlled by prince.

I don't think that's the case for BBGW. The baby died sometime right before the album was released. The video was probably already done.

It recalls a soul ballad version of Leonard Cohen's "I'm Your Man" in many ways. Cue em up back to back...

That IS very much the case. The baby died in late October and the video for BBGW was shot in early November. It was amazingly odd. This was done around the same time as Prince/Mayte recording the Oprah appearance and claiming it was 'all good". I can't imagine what Mayte had to go through doing that video just a couple weeks after giving birth and watching her poor baby die.

I really love this song and the video as well. They really looked happy in the video. My husband isn't a hugh Prince fan like myself, but one day while he was washing my car he came in the house singing that song. It just goes to show how powerful he really is. biggrin

For real?? That is crazy...how could they have held it together and looked so happy? I would have fallen apart.... sad

And I love that song BTW, it was fantastic on the musicology tour. One of my favorites.

Yeah, I know! Prince seemed content to carry on publicly as if there were no problems with the child and everything was fine, even to the point of directly lying to Oprah. I think if the media hadn't dug into the story and begun to unravel the truth that Prince would have carried on with that charade for much, much longer. We might all be sitting here today still wondering how he was keeping the kid so well hidden. eek

I used 2 love the hell out of this song. Strangely I discovered this song through my cousin who doesn't like Prince but oddly enough loves this song. She played "The One" 4 me over the phone and I was sitting there in dead silence surprised at the fact that my cousin had a Prince song! hmm but the whole song wasn't on there and everytime I went 2 her house I played that song. So like a million years later when I finally read the lyrics I saw that he had none other than that Heffa Mayte's name in it{I'm such a hater biggrin } I almost died. Now I try 2 act like I don't like the song when I'm only lying 2 myself. So now I don't play the whole thing when he's about 2 say her name I shut it off. lol Dang this story was pointless neutral cool
