It's a little too smooth and overproduced (shades of things to come), but it's a great snapshot of what music was like in the late 70s -- and who Prince was in relation to that.
great statement. I love this album, recently replaced my cassette with a CD. I'm Yours!!!!! I believe he wanted to be sure that was in there to show people where he intended to go- after he showed everyone he could do all things already being done on the radio in the 70's. While it's a rocking song, it's a bit different than the guitar oriented rock you'd hear on the radio in 1978. One of my all time favorite Prince songs... Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"
They've taken a lifetime lease on Paisley Park ...

JoeTyler said: I totally disagree . I've always thought that "Prince" actually feels like a proper debut in a major label, while "For You" sounds like a cheap demo EP released by an independent label But I like the album, though.
Cheap demo? To me, For You sounds soooo professionally worked and studio polished that rocks couldn't chip the lacquer off the surface of that thing. "Prince" sounds more like a mainstream commercial release but... it doesn't sound like it got near as much attention. If For You had a proper re-master it would really shine, imo.

Listening to it again for the first time in awhile and while I love the songs and the sound of the album itself it does sound on the low end. I would love to hear how it'd sound if remastered. I'm having to crank my volume on my computer to almost max to hear it at a decent level. "Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

i hear you. Soft and Wet's got a place in my top 5 P songs evah. it's brilliant, the production could be a bit bolder, but it's a marvellous tune nonetheless. new to funk, naive in every way

For You is my top 10 favorite albun. I love it. I can listen ot the whole album without skippin' any songs. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

it has a few good moments, but there's nothing on it that would indicate his future talents. "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." -Dr. Seuss

I've grown to like it more. It's not my favorite album, but it's good. Out of the two pre-rude boy, "disco" albums I prefer Prince. Sexy Dancer (long version especially) is the jam.

For You is a sign of a rookie just getting into the biz. This album has it strong points(most notably "Soft and Wet") but overall doesn't even come close to Prince's later work. It's okay at best. Never was my favorite. This album didn't get me to actually run out a buy a Prince album at the time(remember it was 1978 and I'm not mentioning my age) but the album that finally did sell me as a true Prince fan happened 2 years later: Dirty Mind. From that point I was hooked and have been since. So like I said, it's okay at best but Prince eventually got better with time and albums blowing this one way out the box. Peace! Peace and be wild!

I this whole album it's BEAUTIFUL this is most definantely one album I need 2 listen 2 on a regular basis. I would be lying if I said I have favorites bcuz the whole album is gorgous but there are some stand out's 4 me like Soft&Wet, So Blue, For You etc, I'm not gonna name them all but it's just something special about these songs that make them stand out more than the rest. Overall love the album from start 2 fin from the begining when Prince starts off with a beautiful soft fallsetto acapella, 2 the end with a fierce firy guitar jam. Damn! How I love that man so. surviving on the thought of loving you, it's just like the water
I ain't felt this way in years...
