Musicians, pick me two simple P tracks to learn @ my Guitar lesson next week?.. so lesson 2 of 10 starts next week and our teacher [who is a funky bad ass player] wants us all to bring two songs we like to learn over the next few weeks. Ideally accoustic based. As much as Id' love to play the ride, the outro to LGC, the intro to Endorphine machine etc i really need two really simple songs that can be played on an accoustic. Ideally no more than 5 chords by the way and NO bar chords!. Suggestions most welcome.
Can't wait to play funk rythm guitar like our man!. Cheers dudes.

The Cross (3 chords, E, A & Asus2) (Asus2 is only two finger chord, you can also play it without this one, only using E & A)
7 (3 chords, mostly A & A7sus2, and an occasional G) (A7sus2 is a 3 finger easy chord) Cream, as suggested, would be difficult for a newbie. while it only has two chords, they are both difficult chords (Bb and Eb), Bb requires you barring the first fret and Eb is a four finger chord. Hmmmm, no barre chords? I assume that means no minor barre chords, like F# minor or B minor. Well, you can go with:
Little Red Corvette Alphabet Street 7 Delirious Baby I'm a Star Play in the Sunshine Forever in My Life I Wish U Heaven (gotta change keys though - use A, G or D) Sweet Baby Lolita (I think) Have fun!

Delirious, but has a fast tempo:
G C C7 D7 Would love to suggest Dolphin, but it does have a Bm in it. All the rest are open chords. ...and when you get further down the road...we expect to hear you play the solo to Shhhh!

Little Red Corvette
It's a easy acoutsic song, with that sometimes tricky Bm chord "I [G]Guess I should have known, by the [A]way you parked your car side[Bm]ways, that you wouldn't last[G]" That's the same for the intro. The chorus is: [G]Little [A]Red Cor[D]vette! [D] [D] (on these chords I usually strum the guitar a couple of times, you'll understand it when you start playing it) Purple Rain I found a version online that has you put a capo on the 3rd fret, then you just play [G] [Em] [D] [C] Easy peasy, and if you combine it with the actual sheet music, you can add this and that to make it sound really good as an aucoustic song. http://www.ultimate-guita...ic_crd.htm Still the Same by Bob Segar Another fun song, with a twist to the opening C chord. It shows that you can do some subtle changes to a basic chord shape and get some marvelous sound. The bonus by picking a Segar song is that you might get some love for picking a song from a well-loved 70's/80's rocker. http://www.ultimate-guita...ro_tab.htm -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Still it's nice to know, when our bodies wear out, we can get another -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

I think yoursuggestion of 'The Cross' is probably the easiest, but playing a basic 4 string F#m in Starfish and Coffeee to start with should be achievable (might hit some numb notes along the way). I can remember (just) teaching myself something in the key of Amaj some 32 years ago and it involved: F#min - F#min7 - F#min6 (or B9) - Dmaj7 as a simple descending progression - it seemed so pretty, it was worth the effort and the early pain. LOL. Nothing easy about the guitar! Takes lots of practice and dedication. I have been playing for about 9 months now, and still have sooooo much to learn, but I do play every day and love it, cause I have a passion for it. If the passion isn't there, forget it.

I hear ya! I myself have just recently started on bar chords and they suck! Lucky for me I have very long fingers (longer than alot of men too) so that helps with barring, but I hate when the B string lands in the finger joint sooo frustrating! Yea, I agree The Cross is by far the easiest. Simple rhythm, simple chords. It was my very first song I ever played. Following that was Patience, Running on Faith and Freebird (only the basic rhythm part).

You don't ever have to play a barre chord if you don't want to. For instance, take the "B" chord, played in the E position (you know, fingering it like an E chord). You're probably barring it on the 7th fret. It's hard.
Well, drop the barre. Just play the B-G-D-A strings on the 7th, 8th, 9th and 9th frets, respectively. Your pointer finger plays the B string; middle finger plays the G string (sounds sexy!), ring finger plays the D string, and pinky plays the A string. In this example, you aren't strumming either E string, just the four strings in the middle. If you want to get a little more high sound, lay your pointer finger over the 7th fret of the high E string, so that it's playing two strings (the B and the high E). You can also finger minor barre chords the same way. Heck, I don't think I've played a full barre B minor chord in years. Depending on the chord, you can get some cool sound if you leave the high E string open and strum it. It sounds good with B. And of course, that E is a note in the A chord, so if you're playing the A chord on the fifth fret you can leave that high E string open and still play the proper notes. Or, if you want another cool sound, use your pinky on the high E string, but play it two frets above the correct note. In the B chord example, your pinky would play the 9th fret on the high E string, which is the C# note. And if you want to get REALLY tricky, you can tune down your high E string to a D. Then, when you put that pinky on the 9th fret, you're really playing a B note, so the chord is perfect. I'm pretty sure Prince had his acoustic guitar tuned this way on the "Art of Musicology" special. Watch how he plays the C, G and F chords on "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man". When you do it this way, all you're missing is the bass note. But, you don't have to play a barre. Hope that helps! [Edited 5/4/07 8:40am]

KeithyT just do it, for what it costs the pleasure you'll get back is priceless. As long as you get through the first 6 weeks without giving up then you'll be hooked!. Also makes you realise how great P and all the other players are.
