I think I remember reading that the song Gold was widely anticipated as being "the new" Let's Go Crazy (ie - a big rocker hit).
I don't remember who felt that way - WB, managers, Prince, or if it was just promo rhetoric.
But I can't find any source for this.
Does anyone remember hearing this comparison before? Who said this - and where??

I can see why he was going for that... both it and Gold hold the top 2 spots on my fav. song list.

But I can't see Gold as another Purple Rain... sure they're both power ballads... but PR is strong & full of Prince's emotion.
Gold is powerful, but more on a personal level. I have more of a personal connection with it, so that's why you nearly gave me a heart attack.

Sorry if I came on a little too strong.

Let's go crazy... that's in a diff. class than Gold & Purple Rain... it's a good song, but it's not in the same league as those two.

Let's go Crazy is on a rung that's more than halfway up. That's how much I like it.

However, Purple Rain & Gold are on the top rung, far away from any of the other songs. Gold resembles spirituality & enlightenment, so I feel like it floats above Purple Rain... but that's just me.
