Purple Rain
Hate U The Dance come to mind for me. But I've got no idea what inspired them and I'd rather not spend my time trying to figure it out. For me, its time better spent listening to them. Oh man, when I first "got" Purple Rain and interpreted it that way, I felt so bad for Prince. During the "sing-along" chorus, he sounds torn-up inside... and so does his last guitar solo, makes it sound like his soul is crying. And how could I forget TB1's? [Edited 4/29/07 18:17pm] had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

I love U but I don't trust u anymore...I think this was for Mayte but it could have been for someone else...I also think that the end of Joint-to-Joint when he kinda proposes to Mayte is very emotional, but nothing beats Purple Rain...

[b][Edited 4/29/07 18:17pm] Wow...I was just about to post something similar to that. I think the guitar solo in purple rain represents every sort of pain there is. It's a bit random but I think it's similar to pain in that it starts off simmering slowly then slowly builds up and up to this fury then kind of releases. The bit before the "hoo hoo"s actually sounds like crying to me. Damn, I love that solo As for other songs - The Beautiful Ones for sure. Makes me wanna yell at the girl in question too "DO YOU WANT HIM!?!? OR DO YOU WANT PRINCE?!?!!" ") And i think in Another Lonely Christmas it sounds like he's not too far off a good cry.

PR definitely has the best guitar I've ever heard of any Prince song and my favorite. It's so full of emotion. I just hope that someday, I can listen to the song and not think about Prince's sadness, but moreso, a happiness. He doesn't play depressing music most of the time and he plays PR a lot, meaning that it has to have a bright side somewhere. I just heard Another Lonely Christmas for the first time. I couldn't feel the emotion, but as I read the lyrics along with it, it made me sad... who could that song have been about, I wonder. TB1's was probably the first time I heard Prince so emotional in his work. Well, I saw him do the performance in the movie, that was the first time I heard him do it... I always think back to that scene when I hear it. Not so much about pain, but its very emotional... love it. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

I've always said that PR is the only song that makes me happy and sad at the same time. It's uplifting yet it's painful. I like the music at the very end, it's lighter and helps you recover after the guitar solo lol.

To me he's trying to hide it and say "Hey, you left, your loss" but you can hear he's hiding the pain, especially with the "I drink til I'm blind" line. That's my interpretation anyway..

I always think back to that scene when I hear it. Not so much about pain, but its very emotional... love it. It's a shame cause when I watched PR my friend was over so I was a bit distracted. I remember it being on and him lying down on stage and the dreary music in the background but for the most i don't remember that scene. I need to see it again lol.

Empty Room is emotionally painful, and the video makes me cry. An ended relationship probably influenced it.

Until U're In My Arms Again- it was the first Prince songs I heard that made shed a tear "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

I love you but I don't trust you.....Mayte. On the other hand I believe Prince was complicit. Two sides to every story. He happens to have a podium.

The Dance (I think Mayte on that one) I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore (Mayte too) I Hate U (reportedly about Carmen Electra) A Million Days

the dance Yeah it's like "oh you mocked me for liking him but now he's dead it's cool to play him again?" And then they look at you funny when you don't play him. -Timmy on after 6-25 fans

Prince is an actor, not a good one mind u, but an actor nonetheless. It is really hard to differentiate his real pain from him being his usual pretentious self.

I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore- The music is so bare, and the vocals are so vulnerable. I love it, but it still makes me sad to listen to.
Comeback- A song no one ever wants to write. Wanna hear me sing? www.ChampagneHoneybee.com

I think Old Friends 4 Sale (original) is the most personal I've ever heard - and is probably the only reason it was never released in that form.
The Beautiful Ones works well in that area, too, especially if it's true this song was to Susannah Melvoin. I think Another Lonely Christmas is an example of Prince ACTING. It's been said since release that the story in the song is one entirely of fiction so Prince was just getting into a character for the song.

Purple Rain - top of the list - the emotions are just really amazing
Solo - recently re-discovered this extremely emotional song Old Friends 4 Sale - I am sure this must be about a lost friend - who possibly had a cocaine addiction? Sometimes it Snows in April - I love his sad voice in this one Avalanche - Maybe not so sad, but sad/angry The Beautiful Ones - Love this one. Love, passion and yearning coupled with sadness The Cross - His voice and the plea he makes for us to know about "the cross" - gives me goosebumps Free - not so sad maybe, but still quite melancholic sounds from his voice Still Would Stand All Time - simple and sad Anna Stesia - love coupled with adoration and melancholy Nothing Compares to You - Sad - although for some weird reason when O'Connor sings it it sounds more sad. (not saying I like her more!!!) Dorothy Parker - He sounds so lonely although the song is maybe not that sad [Edited 5/1/07 3:02am] "When I want to hear good music, I write it myself"

Morris Day and Vanity, take your pick. Sometimes it Snows in April - I love his sad voice in this one
I wouldn't classify this one as a true revelation of emotional pain, though. It's inspired by a movie character. [Edited 5/1/07 10:12am]
