Has Prince ever broken a guitar after performing?

I know he loves his guitars, but I noticed he throws them after some performances (RRHOF, Webby Awards, Rave 2000 concert)and I was just curious.....It's funny but with the RRHOF performance it looks like he just throws it into the air, but that makes it even cooler.

Legend has it on the final night the Revolution played 2gether, Prince smashed just about all of his guitars on stage. Obviously there are a scarce few that were saved from his rage.

At his concerts in Australia in 2003 he threw his guitar in the air and his guitar technician (Tukumi?) caught it in front of the stage under stage level. I hope that makes sense.

It had great effect at the end of a good guitar song like Shhh though. Very effective.

He also did it a few times after singing Peach in 93.

At 3121 in Vegas he just gently laid his guitar down into the audience at the front of the stage. I got to touch it as it was being 'passed' to the guitar tech. That had to be my best Prince moment yet. Thanks for clearing the RRHOF thing up for me.. smile

He rarely smashes a guitar (I've never actually seen it, anyway), but he throws it up in the air quite often. The black symbol guitar was always used for throwing and wild playing. I heard it actually broke after a fall. He never plays that one anymore. This was before he made the white symbol guitar. He then only had a gold and a black one...

didn't he break that glittery gold one (not the dolphin video one) after
his performance of Peach at the 1994 mtv vma's?

he threw it all the way up in the air and it landed on stage. haven't
seen any pics of him playing that one live anymore since.

shame he broke the black symbol guitar cuz that was my fav. it had a
real dirty sound to it.

Occasionally he has broken a guitar, yes, when it has landed on stage. I'm pretty sure that happened to a black symbol guitar during a live concert series in New York. Most times his guitar techs catch the guitar off-stage unseen.

I think it is kinda funny that people think once he breaks a certain guitar he never plays it again - he has several copies of most of his guitars as replacements, I've seen pics of them lined up back-stage. Saying that, I'm sure I read that his most recent orange cloud guitar was a re-spray of one of his electric blue ones, so he's not against recycling guitar rather than having a new one made in a new colour.

I don't know if he's ever broken a guitar, but in "Graffiti Bridge", when someone from The Time threw the Hohner on the stage, I involuntarily shouted "Don't you hurt that guitar!"

A few people actually clapped, LOL.

This holds some interesting info (from http://www.angelfire.com/...faq.html):

>>>Q: How many guitars does Prince have?
A: Here's the full list of guitars he's been seen with as compiled by the members of prince.org.

Clouds:
*White Cloud Purple Rain era Destroyed at the last Revolution gig. Features spade symbol fret markers.
*Black Cloud #1 Parade era This guitar was the only one to have a natural finished maple fretboard (not painted). Later became the Batman guitar (see below).
*Peach Cloud Sign O The Times era Given away as a prize and not seen since. This Cloud had small black dot markers.
*Blue Cloud Lovesexy Era Commonly known as the Blue Angel. Also featured small black dot markers.
*Black Cloud #2 Batman era All black with bat symbol fret markers.
*Yellow Cloud Diamond and Pearls era.
Blue Cloud #2 Rave era This guitar has gold plated knobs rather than the black plastic mini JB knobs found on earlier guitars. It also has a rounded profile to the body.

Love Symbol shaped guitars:
*White
*Black
*Yellow
*Gold
*Orange
*Purple
We've heard the clouds and symbol are often repainted so there may actually be less of them! <<<

I kinda doubt he has copies of his guitars in the same color. I used to think so, but I've never seen more than one at a time. During the years 94-96, I only saw two symbol guitars, gold and black. He introduced the white one with such emphasis, I doubt there are more than three/four. Also, why repaint if there are several? At last, why name a guitar if it's not an unique item?

Btw, can someone tell me when he played a yellow or orange symbol guitar?

>>>There were two copies of the Symbol guitar made by one of Princes guitar technicians. One was white and the other was black. These were made from mahogany and didnt last too long! Prince has a nasty habit of throwing his guitar way up in the air and letting them crash onto the stage. If you look closely at pictures of the white Symbol you can see that the lower horn has been snapped off and glued back on.
Subsequent symbol guitars namely the purple Habibi models were built by the American wing of Shecter Guitar Research. There are two versions the most recent one having a Floyd Rose vibrato system. This is a first for a Prince guitar. Shecter have also made a gold version of the Symbol guitar.<<<

So that makes: one white, one black, one gold, two habibi's (one of which has a vibrato (tremelo?)). One has been broken, so there are probably four symbol guitars.

Official, that is.

>>>Prince sprays his strings with Finger Ease string lubricant.<<<

I saw him do this, always struck me as funny...

That's a cool link Sander, thanks. Wish I spoke Dutch smile

The symbol really is a strange, ugly thing IMO. Look at those weird little arrow shaped indentations on the body... the left-handed cloud turned out well though!

I used to play in a (rock)band, no one ever used something like that. I actually hated it if something got on my guitar, like hand cream or water.

I did get blisters every now and again... lol

i know what you mean, but you should try it. you wont even notice something is there, except for the ease of sliding up and down the fretboard. i know what you mean, i cant wear hand cream when i play, i always wash my hands first, then spray on the ease.
