I don't think so. I doubt (from the lyrics) that P set out to discriminate. You might disagree with what he's saying, but I don't think he's crossing any serious lines.

In what way? "Family Name" could be construed as anti-semitic on first listen

Only on the first listen? I've heard that song any number of times now...and I still think it is.

But I'd rather not open that can of worms again.

Musically TRC is a fantastic album. His guitar work is amazing and I love the vibe of most songs. Lyrically, it's another story. He seemed so caught up in all his new JW knowledge and it definitely comes out in the lyrics. As far as racist, I wouldn't go that far, but I do see how some might take them that way.

no it isn't, only clueless white folks ill-equipped to understand complex issues related to race, slavery and oppression would accuse TRC of being such an album. should be a clue to the depth (or lack thereof) of the writer (and the mag. or paper) where u read that inane review

Right. Because it's so much deeper to be dismissive of those whose interpretation differs from one's own.

I'm not sure about racist, but it's most definitely sexist and judgmental, as all religious albums must be.

Racism involves hate and I don't think Prince hates any other race, so the answer is no.

Well the album closes with a song about everyone coming together as one, so I really don't see any sign of hatred, either.

I was just about to say this.

The album ends with a repeating "one one one..." Seems pretty all inclusive, when you're talking about all the people of the world.

I wouldn't say it's racist, or for that matter, necessarily sexist either. But Prince definitely showed some poor judgement lyrically in how he presented certain themes and ideas. There's no such thing as a topic that's too sensitive -the key is in the approach you use in getting your message across and in spite of all his best efforts, Prince fumbled on this one. There's also the fact that he'd dove headfirst into a new religion at the time, and like many new converts was more than a bit overzealous in his newfound Truth. He's since settled down a bit, thank J.

Still a well-done, creative showing though. And I like Family Name, dammit.thumbs up!

Yes, Prince still likes to shock, and he likes to express creative ideas, but he (IMO) doesn't have the lyrical chops to pull it off all the time. P Control is a good example of him missing the mark (again in my opinion, only).

But in the end, music is more important than lyrics, to me, and as long as I don't think he's actually spouting racist philosophy (which I think Last December makes clear) he can get away with some crappy lyrics set to hot music.

he always has (see The Beautiful Ones)
