It was written & performed by Dez Dickerson, who was part of The Revolution for a year or two until he quit for "religious reasons".

I've heard that after he left The Revolution, he started a new band called "The Modernaires". But I'm not completely sure about that.

Modernaire is tha name of tha song in question..and Dez was in the band for more than a year or two..he was the bands original guitarist....after he left he formed a straight, all out heavy metal band called Whalebone back in the mid-80's....after that I dont know..I heard he's released a few Christian albums too.....

I was just thinking about how that happened in Purple Rain that Prince let someone else have a song on there. And also how the story was about Wendy & Lisa writing Purple Rain.
I just wondered how Prince felt about that - if it was hard to give up some of his musical control/influence.
And by the way, I can't stand that song - Mountaineer, Modernaire, whatever. I think it's a bad song.

Yes. Dez did release a large set of unreleased and out-of-print stuff. It contains the full song Modernaire and the wonderful '80s gem, The Beat.

It can be purchased from Dez himself, autographed, for $50 from his website. He has also been known to auction them off on Ebay.

I don't have it, but I've heard that the packaging is quite a let-down. I think $50 is kinda steep, to be honest.
