Fave type of Bootlegs Yes Folks its the Mod Magnet! so lets obey the rules here. Discussing is okay but NO where can i get.
Anyway my question is - What are your prefered type of bootleg and why? *rehearsal *Concert *Outtake * neither, i wouldnt touch a boot with a shitty stick I would have to go with Rehearsal boots. I know that they may often be monotonous with the same song being repeated over and over but i just love hearing Princes musical instruction/direction to his band. Perhaps it's because im a musician, but i sometimes just listen in awe at how he hears everything in his band. So attentive - for instance, on the bootleg 'an honest man' during anotherloverholenyohead. He is all over the place directing the band - taking brown mark through the bass part - telling eric to create a horn line for the live version - then he inprovives that beautiful melody on the piano. I could listen to it all day So what type of boots do u prefer and why? Again, respect this site and its rules folks. [Edited 4/29/07 3:30am]

outtakes first, then rehearsals, then concerts.
outtakes because i like hearing the album cuts/hits that could have been. rehearsals, because i like hearing his songs taken apart and worked through - it puts a new perspective on the music. and concerts last because sometimes you get really nice surprises, but sometimes it can just be a lot of boring whatever with dodgy quality. yawn.

My favorite type of bootlegs? All of them! RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

None of them.
I'm not into bootlegs and I'm not looking for them. Somebody sent me a site full of them... I look one look around and I got a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. So I backed away slowly and ran for the hills after that w/o looking [so I don't remember the address or care to]. Prince doesn't approve of them and for that reason, I won't get into them because I respect his wishes whenever/however I can. I'll just stick with collecting his released albums, thank you. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Prince doesn't approve of them and for that reason, I won't get into them because I respect his wishes whenever/however I can. I'll just stick with collecting his released albums, thank you. see, but then he invites fans to his celebrations at paisley park and has polls for what unrleased songs they'd like to see on a "crystal ball 2". how would fans know to answer that poll if we hadn't heard the bootlegs? he knows we listen to them and he's engaged us on that topic. and in the crystal ball liner notes, talking about how "movie star" was d'angelo's favorite unreleased demo. did prince give him a good talking to? you wouldn't know it from the liner notes! based on all this, i believe it's just fine to LISTEN to unreleased stuff. i think it's completely cool to TRADE and SHARE it. it's when money changes hands that it starts getting shady and ethicaly iffy, i think. fortunately, i think the coming of the internet has taken money out of bootleggers' hands and made the "catalog" of prince bootlegs available to anyone with a modem. i'm not sure what prince thinks of this, but i personally think it does him more good than harm. it just bolsters his legendary status as a creative whirlwind and an artist with more great work than he knows what to do with. bootlegs are a huge part of other artists' legacy - the grateful dead and bruce springsteen come to mind - and i think prince has become one of those artists over the past couple of decades. i think it helps him, whether he sees it that way or not.

there are so many ways prince could "beat the boots", but his whole attitude is "the past is the past and i'm on to the next thing", so unfortunately all that great unreleased stuff from years past goes neglected (aside from the bootleggage underground, anyway).

Prince claims he is purely a progressor and continuely moves forward. i beg to differ. It just seems that he concentrates his efforts on the wrong aspects of the past.

Rehearsals definitely. I love hearing his directions to the others and general chit chat. Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"

Outtakes, without a doubt.
I love hearing all the songs that never quite made it onto an album or b-side, and all the early and alternate incarnations of various songs. It's a shame that this part of the bootleg scene has pretty much dried up now.

What do u attribute that to, Boris? what is so different now than back then to make such a huge change in the emergence of new outtakes? its so strange how its just dried up. When was the last known outtake? [Edited 4/29/07 14:13pm]

[Edited 4/29/07 14:13pm] my understanding is that Prince himself was responsible for much of what got out- as he used to freely give cassettes of stuff he was working on to various people. So- he stopped doing that. And got a better lock on the vault Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"

What do u attribute that to, Boris? what is so different now than back then to make such a huge change in the emergence of new outtakes? its so strange how its just dried up. When was the last known outtake? 2 things... 1. Prince plugged the leaks in 1996, so there are pretty much no circulating unreleased tracks after this point. Paisley Park had a 'house cleaning' and the people who made 'security breaches' no longer work there. Also Prince is now independant, so all the early configurations and test sequences that used to do the rounds within WB no longer happen. 2. the internet made boots obsolete, nobody's gonna pay for a boot when they can download it for free, and by a knock-on effect, the people who do still have uncirculating tracks don't have any bootleg labels to sell them to anymore (and they're not inclined to just give them away on the most part).

hmm... i've only heard one song in rehearsal form.
outtakes are great but then you listen to an awesome show and realize how on fire he is when on stage. and i had never heard anything that was not officially released till a short while ago boots just weren't available in small town saskatchewan. i came across some in a store in the city once... just once in my whole life. i assumed they were legit lol (why wouldn't they be? lol they had prince's name on them ) and was going to buy a couple. the dude behind the counter put one on for me to listen to and i realized the sound was crap lol. so i have only ever traded for stuff. it's fun to get a parcel from across the world!
