I love when he does backing vocals for himself here:

Maybe you're just like my mother (you're just like my mother)
She's never satisfied (never satisfied, why...)
Why do we scream at each other (why...y...)
This is what it sounds like when the doves cry

brilliant. cool

Just listened to it (cuz we're all in the spirit here)... watched the video actually... hands down the best video he's ever done. The special effects for the instrumental break halfway thru is just awesome. They truly give a visual to the feel the song creates.
The fact he wrote that in one day... that brilliant song... I just can't believe it... and at age 25 too, what a musical genius...

I remember the day the video was to premire on MTV. It was on a weekday sometime in the early afternoon. I was at school and by the time I got home, a friend of mine who left next door had already seen the video. He said "Hurry up, they're getting ready to show it again!" I saw it and thought P's whole image was bangin'. Loved, I mean I loved the that hat he was wearing. The only dig I was bummed out over was that I didn't see Dez. I was like "Where's Dez? And who in the hell is that girl?!" Also, I was like "Where's Vanity?! That's not Vanity!"

considering his original idea was to have his character be a drug addict... there could have been some pretty dark songs that he wrote with that in mind.

can only imagine what it was like seeing for the first time as a "fan" already.
by now, I'm sure you know the answers to the questions, so I won't go into that.

The whole "get-up" he had on for the scene with the mirror images... I remember seeing it the first time and thought "that's typical Prince right there"... his outfits are so unique. But I love it cuz as the song has a sound that can only say Prince, his outfit does the same... it makes a statement. And totally dig the hat. Little did I know that hats were a popular fashionable item for him.

Man I was saying tha same thing...Apples kinda threw me for a minnit..cuz Vanity6 really fit in with that 1999 tour....and Dez being the most identifiable member of the band and not being there was a shock too...the kamakazie headband was just as important as the purple color if you'd asked me at the time..

We're in the same boat there. It was just so out of the ordinary for me that I half thought of getting off the ride (as a "follower") b4 it began... but that only lasted about a second.
Dare I say it, "his Royal Badness" had me distracted throughout the whole time I watched the video... I'm like "are they gonna show him almost nude again later"... I was kinda bracing for it.

So I really couldn't get into the song... but as weeks went by, the song kept playing in my head, so I decided to go back and face it. It practically blows over me now... I've gotten to love the same and the video for its special effects. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

I've heard that Prince is known for the bizarre... that was my first encounter of it. And I dealt with it. Now I'm crazy in love with the song for its uniqueness.

now i kinda like watching that scene giggle but the video is AWESOME- def. one of my faves. the first time i heard the song i just clicked with it- and when i saw the video i fell in love. the special effects were awesome- i loved the face of the woman at the end when the tear rools down her face. so sad- and yet beautiful at the same time.

Yeah, that whole thing with the keyboard rocked. In the movie, you see that same drawing/painting in The Kid's little "loft"... I wonder if it's his design...

Z, we must be around the same age... because I remember this song in h.s. as well.
My h.s. boyfriend was the Prince freak, well he mixed prince with MJ beat it era. what a sight that was to see. lol

but, when doves cry, is my FAVORITE song.

It just reminds me of when I was a younger, discovering myself and my style/personality.

PR was the sound track to my youth... and WDC was THE jam.

the best song on Prince's best cd, and nobody can touch... not then or today.

lol I hav a funny story regarding the video. Actually, the very next day I had listen to the song for the first time, there was this Black entertainment special on BET (though i dont watch that channel or mtv at all) and right when im channel surfing I catch them talkin about prince and then I see clips of some of his videos, and I'll never forget this, they showed him on the staircase and some more clips of the vid and immediately i thought to myself, "THATS THE VID TO WHEN DOVES CRY!!!" Afterwads I went to bearshare and downloaded to vid and it turned out I was right. How did I know? I've no clue lol lol

I remember sitting in the car, listening to the announcer say, "Up next, a new tune from Prince, When Doves Cry"..

I was like hmmm interesting title...

When it finally came on, I was like omg not only do he have a hit, this is a masterpiece.

Funk with just the drums being the bass??? Incredible!!!

The guitar solo, keyboard solo... the funk face---->disbelief

The lyrics were plain, but meaniful...

To this day, this is his signature song...in my opinion

Yeah, it is. I've always loved that title. The title actually SOUNDS like the guitar intro. Man, if I was cool with the mods here. Well, I'm cool with Tom. Don't know where Hands is. Or Bannana for that matter. But, if they could bring back the last thread i wrote on this song, specifically dealing with the guitar intro. But anyway, P's lead intro somehow sounds like an exotic animal to me. that little motherfucker was BAD.

It's definately a great jam. I remember it came out in the summer between my eleventh and twelfth grade school year. My favorite part of the song are the two screaming sections. Nobody can scream like Prince.

The material he wrote for The Time was some of his best. That first album by The Time is what definately set loose the material on his 1999 album. On that, he was like "I can out funk AND out rock ya'll!" Which was sick cuz he was basically trying to out do himself. As far as "Doves", the song also has a classical vibe to it.

The part when P's band starts to do the little bit with the swinging' of the arms when their walking off looked stiff as hell. Especially from my girl Lisa. She look like she can't dance to save her life. Bobby and Matt are looking a little bit stiff as well. Wendy was o.k. She had spunk a mile long back then. Mark was the only one who could hang with P and P knew that.
