I didn't have this reasoning when I first rented Purple Rain. I just figured I'll watch, like the songs and listen to them on the album my dad's had as long as the movie's been out. But now, my reasoning would be "since the music was written at the same time as the movie was, I should check out the movie then listen to the songs"... and ID the songs from the diff. parts of the movie.
On my last listen of the whole album, I came up with a whole new interpretation that had nothing to do with the movie at all and still works.

I don't know the whole story about Parade's relation to Under the Cherry Moon. I think, based on what happened with Purple Rain, I should watch the movie and listen to the songs and interpet them as they were used in the movie... I think it'd be weird if I listened to the songs and then be like "oh, so that's what its really about/so that's how it fits into the movie"...

... I have a very unorthodox way of checking Prince out. My albums certainly weren't bought in any order... you can't expect me to explore the movie & soundtrack in the most logical fashion.

Well, the big difference here is that the Parade album is more or less meant to be able to stand alone. Unlike Purple Rain, UTCM is not a concert movie. While Prince does play the piano on more than one occasion in the film, none of the instrumentals he plays are on Parade. The album tracks are used as background music like in a normal movie. Indeed, the content of the songs are really not tied to the movie at all - even the 2 that name check a character's name from the movie don't actually directly relate to the plot of the film.

True... but as slowly as you're able to collect them, I wouldn't delay the experience too much - especially given how much there is to absorb.
