Rainbow Children, Musicology, or 3121?

Rainbow children for me. When I first heard it, I thought "WTF?" like most people, but now despite a couple of filler/clunker tracks, I love it. Playing it to death at the moment

After that, 3121

then Musicology, which I dont really like.

Gotta be The Rainbow Children for me. The quasi-religions JW-hoodoo is pretty baffling and embarrassing, but musically there are some really creative moments. A rare glimpse of the SOTT Prince, in my humble opinion.

My least favorite Prince album is the one that I have the most copies of. I swear I have about 12 copies of Musicology.

I really like most of the songs on 3121, and the lyrics are less offensive than those on Rainbow Children, but Rainbow explored a much more exciting musical style for me.

RC wins.

Rainbow Children pretty much tops the list for me. And I'd say that I liked Musicology better than 3121 all in all.

As brilliant as The Rainbow Children album is, it has all the hang ups and problems of any concept album. It's heavy, it's not effortless and fun, and isn't thrown on at a party. Don't get me wrong--it's a great album. I just think that The Rainbow Children is best experienced sitting alone, listening to the narrative, and pondering the lyrics.

Musicology and 3121 are more easily digestable. They are more fun and are more flexible experiences.

I don't own Rainbow Children (and it's not on my priority list, so I doubt I'll ever consider getting it).

But Musicology & 3121 I do own.

Musicology definitely wins.
It's stronger as a whole (although it does fall off the tracks from tracks 8-10) and it sounds more raw. Like I can picture Prince playing the instruments and such... I like having that visual. It feels it is has more life in it.

3121, some tracks sound like "studio plastic". Like Lolita & Fury, which could have been done better... but who am I to critique Prince on his methods? It's his album lol
I hate being a critic, but I'm just voicing an opinion, Prince.
It does have some great tracks, though. The Word & The Dance, along with Te Amo Corazon are my top 3 favorites.

Same here. Also, Rainbow is the onlyalbum since lovesexy that I didn't buy the first day it was out. It took me over a year!

For me, it's not even a question: The Rainbow Children! It was the first time in YEARS that a Prince album made me want to close my eyes, tilt my face to the heavens, and cry "YES!!!!!"

It re-ignited my passion for his music, and my respect for his musicianship. I can't wait for that to happen again. cool

3121 for me! I love it when Prince sounds like he's having fun on a record
and he did on this one smile

However, I do enjoy hearing the Rainbow Children songs played on the Aladdin Dvd, but not so much on the CD

Musicology has some really shining moments (Marrying Kind, Cinnamon Girl, A Million Days), but it Also includes one too many yawn moments
If you will, so will I

Musicology feels more alive and heartfelt... more raw.
I listened to it the other day and it is full of personality. Prince sounded like he had fun making it and tweaking all of the songs and such. But he kinda loses focus from "The Marrying Kind" 2 "On the Couch"... the transition's kind of weak between those. Overall, though, it sounded like it was full of heart

3121 is more diverse, but again, certain tracks are better than others because certain ones sound like "studio plastic" while others sound more heartfelt. I find myself divided on that album with 2 different vibes intersecting one another. It's weaker as a whole for that reason.

Musicology: good "comeback" record, but 3121 feels more confident.

TRC is the most uneven, but has the highest highlights. It takes music higher in the way we know only Prince is capable, and it's really weird to boot. I love it.

3121 has nice easy hooks and sounds like classic Prince at times, but I'm not sure it's actually any better than the also-decent Musicology.

but its a tie btw 3121 and Musicology. I listen to both equally and I love most (if not all) of the songs on the albums.

ugh, I'm turning more and more into a critic. Forgive me, Prince, but I'm only trying to be honest.

If he had spent more time with 3121, polishing the songs, making them sound more alive (this only goes towards a handful of them, though), it really could have been so much better. Lolita, Fury, and Te Amo Corazon leave something to be desired. It felt a little rushed.

Musicology, could have used some "ironing" to smooth out the wrinkles from tracks 8-10 to keep the focus of the listener.

That's just me. Man, I hate being a critic, but it could be worse.
I don't hate either of these albums. I love them and if Prince thinks they're perfect in his eyes, fine. I won't say this to his face.
I'm just saying that if the kinks and wrinkles were smoothed out, the replay value of both albums would improve.

Ugh, I hope this is one post of mine that Prince never sees. I hate coming off like this... it's the same reason why I hate it when I hear one of his songs that I don't like cuz he puts so much hard work into each song.

Interesting. I tend to think that, in general, Prince's best music is the stuff he doesn't go over with a fine tooth comb. I like my Prince music, urgent, slightly flawed, and not meticulously fussed over.
