That's why we're on a forum. Just seems like it'd be common sense that a person would not cease being a genius, just because someone didn't like his or her output? I'm not a fan of classical music, but I'm not running about dicrediting Beethoven's genius All I'm saying...How does one become an 'ex-genius'? (No disrespect) If you will, so will I

i think TRC is better than albums like SOTT, Batman, and Emancipation. So genius is there for me.

(No disrespect) Then again what makes someone a musical genius? Threads like this will continue to spark different opinions in that way. Its not like P discovered gravity or made the equation E=MCsquared, he made music that appealed to a large audience. What makes someone a musical genius or an artistic genius is soooo subjective. Thats why people continue to think P "fell off" cause they can no longer dig what he does and to that extent, this discussion could go on forever. [Edited 4/30/07 11:54am]

Absolutely Prince is still a genius. I think he is easily the most significant musician in the last 30 years. I do think we put too much pressure on our "Genius'" in our culture. Prince blew the music scene apart in the early 80's. He left and indelible mark on the music that is still present in the best of the current music whether it be alternative rock, hiphop, r&b, or dance. Hell he even had some impact on how country music is produced.
But we can only expect his real impact to last so long. While I think it is absolutely possible that Prince can blow us all away at the drop of a hat, it is very likely that he will ever repeat the impact that he had on the music scene/culture in the 80's. So he is definitely still a genius, but we can't rate his genius by his current social or chart impact.

I love threads like these cause you can hear some of the silliest things from fans. It will never fail with an artist like Prince. As for the genius thing, as said early in the thread, how in the hell do you lose being a genius? If Prince "lost" that, then so did Stevie Wonder after 1980 or James Brown after the mid 70's. No one would dare say anything like that about those 2 or anyone else, so why should Prince be the exception to the rule? Plus, music hits everyone differently. There are folks here who don't like 3121. I love it and it's one of my favorite Prince CD's ever. Even when he was making CD's that I didn't like in the late 90's, I never thought he lost the gift that makes him a genius. He will NEVER lose that, no matter what's going on with the music. Prince will always be the total package for me, no matter what. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
