It's great, but not his best!

NO!!!!! nothing on that album is his "best" anything!
my personal favorite ballad: "Condition of the Heart", closely followed by "The Beautiful Ones". (I DO NOT consider Purple Rain or Gold to be ballads btw or they'd be there). I know many will disagree, but I never thought straight-up, standard ballads were a strong area for him. Unless of course, they were overtly sex related, i.e. Do Me Baby, Scandalous, even Adore has the line "I didn't fuck you just for kicks" . All great songs, all much better than Diamonds and Pearls. Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"
They've taken a lifetime lease on Paisley Park ...

DreamyPopRoyalty said: Diamonds & Pearls is definitely among the best and one of my personal favorites. The instrumentals he used at the bridge are incredible, really showcases his brilliance.
But I think he has done better, like: Gold & Purple Rain (my top 2 favorite ballads and Prince songs overall) [Edited 4/22/07 9:03am]

Don't like it at all, apart from the bit where the classical keyboards and guitar come in. Much prefer 'Free', 'Ana Stesia', 'The Grand Progression', 'Five Women' or 'The Beautiful Ones'.

Without a shadow of doubt the best ballad in the world: EYE HATE YOU.
Followed by SOMETIMES IT SNOWS IN APRIL, DAMN U and SHHH. But there's so many more. D&P seems weak compared to those mentioned, I think.
