Diamonds & Pearls is definitely among the best and one of my personal favorites. The instrumentals he used at the bridge are incredible, really showcases his brilliance.

But I think he has done better, like:

Gold & Purple Rain (my top 2 favorite ballads and Prince songs overall)

That's what I think of as a Ballad. I don't feel Diamonds and Pearls is a ballad, though...

Is Joy in repetition a ballad? Then that's my favourite one.

Yeah, the definition of what a ballad is really tricky... confused half the time, I'm not sure if a song is or isn't... (whether it is or isn't a ballad) isn't really what I think about when I think about a song in general...

No.
It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

No, imo The One, International Lover, Do Me Baby, Purple Rain, Another Lonely Christmas, It's Gonna Be Lonely, Adore, I Hate U and The Dance - to name a few - are much better ballads...
D&P is a bit too sweet

I love the song, especially since it's one of those I grew up with, but he's written lots of others that are just as good or even better. Do Me Baby, Adore, Nothing Compares 2 U, TMBGITW, Purple Rain, just to name a few.

here's an interesting question.

What percentage of Prince's songs would count as ballads?

50%? 35%? 75%?

He's written so many... that it's kind hard to choose.

I like "Diamonds & Pearls" a lot, but there are better ballads.

no. nothing about it seperates it from the glut of good Prince ballads, but never achieves what the great ones do.

And what Prince ballads do you consider great and why don't you put Diamonds and Pearls in that category?

I'll say this... it's a million times better than the BSB "All I have to give"... that one thing above reminded me of it:

But my love is all I have to give
Without you I don't think I could live
I wish I could give the world to you
But love is all I have to give

I like BSB music, but that song is just ill. Of course, BSB didn't write that song, so it naturally it reeks of "phony" 2 me.

"Diamonds & Pearls" has so many good qualities. It wouldn't call it is best, but definitely one of his best (and one of my favorites)

Great: Free; Adore; Do Me, Baby; Crucial; Extraordinary; How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore

those are examples of top of the tier ballads that I qualify as great.

Diamonds and Pearls is very good, and goes in that next tier that would include the likes of When 2 R in Love, Insatiable, Scandalous

Near the bottom of the list, in my oppinion. MANY, far better, ballads are available on most albums.

No. It's a nice track but it's a bit too formulaic and I've always found the lyrics to be rather sub-par.

I think The One is about the best ballad I've heard from him.
