That's the truth, but you can't teach an old horse new tricks, some of these folks are gonna be stuck in the 80's forever and not just with Prince!

Is the phrase "old horse"? I thought it was "old dog".....You can't teach and old dog new tricks.....

that would be correct. I guess they were thinking about the "can lead a horse to water, but not make them drink" thing.

Actually, I didn't quite answer the question in my first post.

I've always respected Prince as he is now. When I first knew he was still doing music, I was amazed. To see someone of his age (lol what age?) still going at it. I immediately accepted him for who he is now. My first time seeing his performances were at present (American Idol, GMA: Summer Concert Series & the HalfTime Show)... and I always had that respect for him.

I couldn't expect him to be the same Prince I saw in "the best 10 minutes of my life" at the end of Purple Rain... I don't expect him to be the same person... and I don't care. I like him the way he is now as much as I like him in the past.

I was 16 then and I fully agree. (but for me it was more than 10 mins, it was that whole year and a few more wink ) Although I do miss him performing certain songs live, due to his giving up cursing.

Vainandy is remnant of the old guard who still makes a distinction in Prince's sound from 1984 to 1985. Most people stopped with that in the 90's, but vainandy likes his MPLS sound cold, funky, and synthed out. That's all.-)

Your point was what? That Prince is basically the same as he was before Larry? I agree with you.

That is my point. I don't care 4 Larry but his influence is less than it's made out 2 be.
[Edited 4/19/07 12:49pm]

His influence may not appear "concrete"
in his music but I see it as a way to stay on the right path.

confused come again????? hasn't the boredom around here been obvious lately? Prince fans NEED more music.
I do respect him now- fully, but cannot for the life of me understand why I have to wait so long for new music. I supported his whole fight to be "free". But under WB, we could count on an album a year. Now? Not. So. Much.

Guess thats his style. Destroy all we think we know about the industry. Set his own rules. Flood us with output. Watch others jump on board. Go old school and do the one cd a year again.

what!, so you'd put Rave, NPS, Musicology in the same league as SOTT, Parade, Lovesexy, . Get off the crack quick!

Maybe not SOTT or Parade BUT... LoveSexy isn't perfect either. If not for the saving grace of a centerpiece like Anna Stesia I'd find it bordering on boring territory. Given that, I'd put it around the same level as Rave or Musicology.

boy, I can't wait until I own enough albums 2 contribute my own thoughts. But the fact I haven't picked up Musicology in weeks is saying something... even though I did rank it above 3121... shrug

eek eek eek How old do you think he IS? He's only in his 40's... there's plenty of people in their 40's and later still 'doing music'.

haha... I get all weird and stuff when his age comes up. He looks incredible for a guy who's edging 50... age is like a meaningless number, his music defines his "age" better than his numberical age of almost-49.
I look at him and just see an incredibly talented musician, not a guy that's almost 50.

He doesn't seem to care about age or birthdays, so I guess that "philosophy" has rubbed off on me (along with a distaste for the word "fan")

Except for adding shit hop to his music every now and then, I don't see any difference in Prince today than he's been since 1985. Now....before 1985 is an entirely different story. That's when Prince was bad as hell and could do NO wrong. lol

I think Prince's 80's roll lasted untill at least LoveSexy...the shit hop started on Graffiti Bridge but post Diamonds and Pearls has been era of less consistancy in quality of musical output only my oppinion still respect and love him.

Well, maybe not "Rave" or "New Power Soul" since those are sell-out embarassments. Yeah, I'd put "Musicology" in the same league as "Sign O The Times" though.....retro 60s/70s vibe over a "Princely" type sound.

They might be going for the same VIBE but no way are they in the same LEAGUE. I understand you prefer early Prince but come on!

When I think of the title track of 'Sign O' The Times', I do get the same vibe I do from Musicology...
I don't own 'Sign O' The Times', so that's all I can really say about it.

wow, 4 albums?, enjoy the great journey ahead. Which 4 do you have?. [somebody hook this dude up quick with funk!

Every day for the past 2 months, I've enjoyed the journey.

Currently I own (in order of purchase):
Purple Rain (my dad's had it for 23 years, that's right, u know what that means)
Musicology
3121
The Gold Experience (used, but in MINT condition)

I've been listening to them for a month now. Although I know I want more, I still feel like there's so much more to do. I've gotten the total jist of 3121 yet... not to mention Musicology hasn't been getting any love 4 a few weeks now.

If you wanna pass on your advice about my next move, I welcome it. I have 8 albums on my "wish list" posted on my blog http://www.xanga.com/DreamyPopRoyalty a couple of posts down. I don't feel like typing them all up 4 fear I'd forget one.
I'm all 4 listening to everyone's advice about my next move.

The final decision's always mine, but the last time someone told me to get a particular album and I did... I fell in love with it... given some time & attention, of course.

and it's dudette wink

Prince has already changed my life the moment I opened the door for him. wink

I hear that "Under the Cherry Moon" is hard to find, though.
So, you would recommend listening to the soundtrack b4 watching the movie?

shrug I'm just curious. Parade and the movie don't hold much interest for me right now. The only song I've heard off it was "Kiss".

I don't see how. "Musicology" is generic crap and "Sign O' The Times" is haunting majesty. But of course all Prince music gives off vibes of something that came before because it's him at the end of the day.

And get SOTT!!!! biggrin

This goes 4 everyone else 2. I always like to hear opinions of the people here. They're as adamant about their favorites as they are for the man himself.
