I will say with my dying breath that someone played The Knack for him in 1979. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

For me, I see a definite influence from Adam Ant in his look from Controversy - Purple Rain. He visited Europe during the Dirty Mind tour and some of the New Romantic stuff must have rubbed off on him.

Alltough i can't point any direct influences to certain songs, i really think Prince must have heard / listened to:
Elvis Costello and the attractions, Blondie, The Cars and B'52's (Dirty Mind and Controversy) and also Afrika Bambaata, Talking Heads, Devo (1999)

I always see a lot of a young Mick Jagger in his singing style and stage persona during that period. Very raw and utterly, compelling arrogant!
IMO the Hendrix/Little Richard/James Brown stage influence appeared later, like more around the Purple Rain tour (see syracuse).

In Dez's book, it mentions that while touring europe, Prince was very into the whole punk scene breaking at the time...

yeah it was probably due to the punk scene at that time cuz Prince 80-81 definitely had a punk sound going on.

P's main punk influence was the New York Dolls and Johnny Thunders who was the Dolls lead guitarist. Although the Dolls were also considered glam, they are credited as one of the originators of punk. Another o.g. from punk is Iggy Pop who definately influenced P during his Dirty Mind period. During 80 and early 81, Prince visually was a cross between Iggy and Johnny Thunders. Speaking of which... for anyone who has seen the Dirty Mind tour videos, I noticed a huge change in his stage presence from the New York show (in March '81) to the Paris show (June '81), as if he became a lot more confident in his style by the time the tour hit Europe.

He got his moves at the time from Mick Jagger and his outrageousness from Rick James. Andy is a four letter word.
