for me there was HUGE growth between "For You" and "Prince", but musically there was creative DECLINE between "Prince" and "Dirty Mind.

For You and Prince both sound like disco albums to me , and dirty mind is the first time I get a real sense of raw funk. I wanna Be Your Lover doesn't sound nearly as funky as head , and Bambi lacks the same pop appeal as When U Were Mine .

I don't think Dirty Mind is huge leap forward from Prince though. It just sounds like a progression. In Dirty Mind, his voice sounds more confident, the tunes are more raw, and it sounds like he's stopped being self-concious.

For me, Controversy was a much bigger leap forward compared to Dirty Mind than DM was to Prince. That's not to say Controversy was a better album, but his song writting really got crazy during Controversy.

Biggest increase from Come to Gold? All those songs were written and recorded at the same time. They are parts one and two of the same album... more or less.

Biggest decrease from SOTT to Lovesexy? I'm sorry, I would have to disagree with you here. Lovesexy is a glorious and courageously composed piece of work, as is SOTT.

For me, biggest increase would have to be from Controversy to 1999, taking the 'new wave' sound and embellishing it to create what would become the Minneapolis Sound - and recapturing some of the soul of the first two albums.

Biggest decrease - Lovesexy to Graffiti Bridge (via Batman). Prince started chasing trends, got caught up in a movie project (Batman) that muddled the GB project and produced a flawed, but entertaining, album and a crappy compromise of a film.

I would say For You to Prince.
Then Prince to Dirty Mind.

Unbelievable leaps from album to album.

Controversy to 1999 is a pretty incredible change.
