Everyone knows that SOTT is gonna win...again...and again...

"1999" gets NO respect! sad

lol agreed of course

1999 is too long. Too many of the songs outstay their welcome. I read a review that it feels like a 12" album and thats the feeling i get when i listen to it. Sure a band can stretch out on a groove but many of the songs are a couple of minutes too long. If Prince would have edited it a little and thrown in Irresistable bitch it would tie with SOTT as his greatest album. Extended versions are cool but as seperate entities not nearly a whole album of them.

The extended versions in my opinion are what make the album so intriguing. This album is by far one of his boldest- a double LP by an artist without a big audeince- an album full of LONG songs and an album that diverges from the mainstream rather quickly after the first side of the first LP. "1999" is perfect in its form, I believe.

Bingo G Money. His first double..his clout being used..his own vision...his breaking the 3 minute pop song rule. The art work..the photos..the eye on the vinyl.

Agreed but it dont make it necessarily riveting listening. 1999 is one album i simply cant listen to in one sitting. Even though individually i love all the songs and think the arrangements are genius.

Most masterpieces take work and are not easily digested, taken in etc. 1999 was terrible to listne to for me--it took weeks before I could finally get it. SOTT I enjoyed from beginning to end on first listen. It took the work of 1999 and all of its capabilities for me to be able to listen to SOTT easily. Its like taking algebra before trig. You hate it at first because its new and twisted..aint regular math..you finally get it and it becomes like a glove..then when you get to trig etc you say oh shit..I can do this..thanks to algebra. 1999 aint regular math.

Being a mathematician, I LOVE the math analogy! Actually, "1999" came quite easily for me. It was my first Prince album, and it has always been at least tied for my favorite.
