How has Prince changed you?

As many of you know, I'm still relatively new to the world of Prince's music. But I already feel like he's changed me and I like the changes I see in myself.

Intead of going on and on, I'll just add a couple of points and let everyone add their own.

* He's allowed me to see the world from a new POV
* I look at music a lot differently now becuz of him (in both good & bad ways)
* I believe more in fate, regarding him, and feel that everything happens or doesn't happen 4 a reason.

To be completely honest, I didn't think Prince had changed me too much. And I won't say me changing has been completely his direction.
But now i do know and have realized one thing he has changed alot in me!

I used to be the girl (and this is going to sound very cliche` but) who was popular, with the popular friends who all looked the same. I fit a stereotype. I wore the same clothes as my friends even though I didn't like them and i pretended to like the same things. Although I never let anyone take advantage of me I still wasn't being myself.
Until, I started listening to Prince again and more, and watching him again and more. He changed me! I slowly but surely have now become the girl with the same friends but I don't really look like I should be in there "group" my clothes are different, and I'm the only one out of my group of friends who does not care what anyone thinks or says about me. I don't listen to the same music, wear the same clothes, or anything as my friends. Now, I fit my own standards and my own rule and people admire me for breaking a shell that most people new i didn't belong in.

And I absolutely give 80% of the credit to prince.

He's certainly made me more open-minded about a few things.
He's introduced me to genres I'm unfamiliar with (R&B, rap, soul, funk)

In conjunction with what I've learned in one of my classes, I look at the world definitely. I take a trail thru the woods to get from my on-campus apartment to the campus, and sometimes I take a look around and reflect on the world around me. The same way I take time with his songs and reflect upon them.

Prince opened up different genre's of music for me. Let's Go Crazy was the first time I actually enjoyed the heck out of the electric guitar, whereas before Prince all I did was listen to rap (before it was called hip-hop), R&B and reggae. Now I enjoy funk music, jazz, rock, R&B and whatever genre you would categorize as ATWIAD and Parade.

Now-a-days, I find myself not only enjoying a song, but enjoying different parts, the bass, synth, guitar, piano and hornz sections and the arrangements and vocals.

Even during the Purple Rain days, after When Doves Cry blew me away and I went and bought the record, songs like Computer Blue, I've never heard anything like that before, didn't think music could go like that, taking me on such a wild ride.

confused I thought this would be a hot topic... but I guess the boards are kinda dead right now.

He certainly made me a fan of electric guitar. He makes it artistic... I used 2 to prefer acoustic because electric sounded like noise 2 me for a while.

He make me appreciate songwriters a lot more... but that's kind of a double-edged sword.

I look at songs differently. I look at the components as well as the whole and am more subjective (that's the right word, right?). I also don't listen 2 albums the same way. I call them albums, not CD's, haha. I look at the pieces as well as how they affect the whole. I've only done it with his albums, but I try to find a central message within it.

He reinvigorated my faith in good music. With the arrival of Rihanna, Chamillionaire, Pussycat Dolls and countless emo bands on the mainstream music scene, I began to feel like music was deteriorating and that maybe there was no such thing as talent anymore. I really didn't realisen some of the absolute crap I was listening to.

Then I happened to see the Black Sweat video and eventually listened to Purple Rain and suddenly I felt OK with music again. Even though most of these songs are from years ago, I still feel better knowing that you actually needed talent to be an entertainer back in the day. And I'm so glad he's still going now.

Well, I think in a summary of alot. Prince made it okay for me to be me. His originality in music and appearance made me realize you shouldn't care what other people think about you and that no matter what people say, at the end of the day it's okay to be who you really are. Without fear of judgement.

I've always been an individual when it came to music, after the boyband days at least.
I feel like when I last listened 2 TGE, Prince was telling me to be an individual... while listening 2 "Gold", I saw the ocean of despair as people that follow the crowd (conformists)... and it's not fashionable 2 be like everyone else.
Musicology sparked my interest because its message is about "real music", making it the perfect antidote 4 today's mainstream "garbage".

And I've dropped the word "fan" out of my vocabulary... well, almost.

Since I got into Prince and his music at the tender age of 9 and have been a diehard fan ever since. I don't think he changed me but more like molded me.

I was already a grown-up when I happened upon Prince, so he didn't "change" me, at all.

Although, in 1988, he did reaffirm my love of polka dots.

I don't know if there is enough space on the internet to fully be able to answer that question.

Certainly, he's brought joy to my life.

Absolutely... the first time I saw the last 10-minutes of Purple Rain... either my mom or dad commented "I think she's in love with Prince"...

I admit, he's always had some kind of spell over me. I'm convinced of the above claim as well...

I wanted my u/n 2b "Slave4Princebychoice", somewhere along those lines... but the site wouldn't let me use the word "slave"... so I ended up with this.

I believe that he's done both. He's changed my POV on my things in life, things I knew nothing really about (love)...
I've become more open-minded and have become more accepting of certain things and of others... Once his piercing eyes shot an arrow into my heart, I immediately developed an admiration and respect 4 him, so much that nothing I've seen him do has made me turn tail and run away. All that mattered was that he made me feel a certain way that I liked.
He's slowly starting to mold me as well... when it comes to his music, he lets me make my own decisions, but at the same time, he plants suggestions in my head of what each song or album could be...

He's showed me that music can be very empowering and intoxicating... and I've started to live my life more in balance because he does the same with his life.

That's definitely one of the biggest changes I've found in me.

I feel more and more that things happen for a reason... and I just go with the flow. Do whatever feels right, not just because I feel I have to.
