I am old enough to remember all of these. My husband teaches a music appreciation class in HS and recently bought an 8 track player (TG&Y brand for those of you who remember prewalmart...TG&Y, Ben Franklin, Magic MArt, Perry's, Mcclellan's...ok I feel old) on Ebay to show them what it was and how it worked and why we were so excited by it, compared to albums. 'cause if you didn't have the fancy robot arm for your needle, dropping it on the right track took a certain amount of dexterity and hand eye coord. lol

haha

that definitely would have been the case with me if I discovered him that early.

Timing has played a key role in when I discovered him and when I dove into his world... it was perfect cuz I'm at just the right age to understand nearly everything about him and his music... I wouldn't be as into him as I am if I got into this at an earlier age.

yeah.. mostly DJ's would use 45's today.. it's a small version of an album, but only 2 singles are on it .. 45 is the speed of the turntable..

o gosh.. have you heard of an 8-track? lol boxed
[Edited 4/13/07 20:17pm]

haha, I know what an 8-track is...

but I've got no idea what 45" and 12" are... can't u just call them records? I understand what records r.

They are all records but each term means different things. "45's" were 7 inch vinyl singles and albums were called either "albums" or LPs".

Albums were 12 Inches in size but, when somone says "12 Inch", they are referring to a 12 Inch single, which later became known as a maxi-single. It was the size of a record but had only one song on each side. It was an extended version of a song that was on an album.....like the extended version of "Let's Work" or "Little Red Corvette". Also, many rap artists in the early years didn't even make albums. Most of them only made 12 Inch singles until rap became extremely popular.

The same thing existed when CDs took over. They had various names also such as "album", "single", and "maxi-single".

You are taking me back now. I definately remember TG&Y. Howard's was another similar store pre-Walmart.

As for the 8 Track players, I remember a friend having a really great 8 Track Tape with lots of various artists. I looked at the tape and it said "Memorex". That's when I learned that they made more expensive 8 Track players that would record just like cassettes (which were mainly only on little portable players that wouldn't thump). I begged my grandmother for an 8 Track recorder for years so I could record songs off the radio and play them through big stereo speakers with power (unlike cassettes during that era). When I finally got one, the damn 8 Tracks went out of style about a year and a half later. lol

I never warmed up to the idea of cassettes replacing 8 Tracks though because, when you recorded an 8 Track tape, the recording had much less tape hiss than cassettes. The recording also seemed to have more power and bass.
