shrug regardless, he had me convinced that he was miserable at that point in his life...
4 some reason, I just can't believe that he'd put on such an act and (excuse me, Prince) be such a drama queen... if he wasn't hurting about something.

That's when I saw him as the victim...

...and that's why his little performance worked. The problem is, of course, that he wasn't the victim of anything... He willingly signed a contract and when he couldn't live up to it, he got all bent out of shape.

As far as the drama queen stuff... Prince has been a drama queen for ages.

Even now, I still believe this:
It's so much easier for me to believe the best in him and not think badly of him. Believing he's the victim is just easier on my conscience... shrug I don't care what anyone else says...
luckily, that performance was just an isolated incident and he hasn't, supposedly, tried to pull the wool over my eyes since. Thank God.
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Well, the thing is... he's a normal human being just like the rest of us. It's one thing to appreciate his music but I've never been one for idolizing entertainers. Someday you should pick up the book "Possessed: The Rise And Fall of Prince" by Alex Hahn. Some peeps around here don't like it but it's the closest thing I've read that shows the genius and the madness of the 'real' man behind the showman.

Prince likes to create grand public shows and scenarios for just about everything, whether it's the cancelation of an album, a fight with his record company, etc... he's been doing it for ages. I don't mind most of it because it's part of what fuels that 'mystique' around him as a performer. A lot of it is fun. The only time I was really disgusted by his actions in that vein was the big press release/lie about his divorce with Mayte.

Buttox

The thing I like about the Letterman version is that it is fresh, the instruments are alive and organic around his rather mumbled vocals. The harmony part near the end of the song is much much better than the album version (which muffles one of the vocals) and the guitar kicks more ass live as well. It's not the performance I'm on about or whether Prince looked happy or not...its how the song sounds....When I heard it I thought: 'with a bit more polish this could be a hit single'. When I heard the album version I thought:zzzzz.

Here are some other examples:

Jam of the Year: I so wanted energised vocals on this one...the theme of the song demands it but instead we get a wimpy falsetto...the Emancipation MTV show was somewhat better.

In this Bed I Scream: Without the whining synth and a bit more grit this could have been a huge hit single. I've never seen him perform this one live.

And on the flipside:

Sign of the Times great live and great in the studio...ditto If I Was your Girlfriend, Adore, Forever in MY life...etc, etc....
