I'm glad Electric Intercourse was pulled from Purple Rain

...and replaced by "The Beautiful Ones". Heard for the first time the other day, it's not nearly as edgy or dramatic as TBO in my opinion

"The Beautiful Ones" is an appropriate song for the scene that it appears in.At this point in the film,Apollonia is starting to hang around Morris, which makes Prince jealous. The Kid needed to get things straight, lay his cards on the table:

baby,baby,baby
what's it gonna be?
baby,baby,baby
Is it him or is it me?

Performing "Electric Intercourse" during this particular scene wouldn't have made any sense.Having said that,I still wish it could have been used somehow....maybe as a B-side,at least. It's a shame the world never got to hear that great song!

Yes The Beautiful One's is better but what really needs to happen is a special edition of the album released with Electric Intercourse, and all the other unreleased songs too!!

I agree that 'The Beautiful Ones' is a better song and more appropriate for the
movie (it was written specifically for it). I do still like 'Electric Intercourse'
though, and I think it is a shame that it never surfaced on a b-side or got used
on one of Prince's associated artists albums.

EC should have at least been a B-side. It is better than the way overrated 17 Days. And didn't Take Me With U not have an unreleased B-Side? He could have stuck it right there..

Prince is too stingy with his grooves.

Was it really written for the movie ? I always thought it was written for Susannah Melvoin who , at that time, still was with someone else. Not that I´m doubting your info, I´m just curious.

He could have used it as the B-side to "I Would Die 4 U".It's a much better song than "Another Lonely Christmas".

Yes, it was written especially for the movie, but that doesn't mean it couldn't
still have been about Susannah (from a personal perspective). Up until that
point Electric Intercourse was the intended song, but then shortly before
filming commenced it became apparent that lyrically it didn't fit with the scenes
around it, as by that point in the movie things had moved beyond the making-
out-in-basement-and -I-think-I-love-you stage and into the 'jealous lover'
stage. So he wrote The Beautiful Ones to lyrically express that conflict
better than a straight-out love song. The same goes for Darling Nikki,
the original 'dirty' song for the movie was going to be G-Spot, but again
he needed something with a little more bitterness and jealousy in it to fit
with the tone of that scene better.

Both of these changes were spot on IMO, as both songs have a bit more
fire and dynamism due to their accusatory tone, and fit emotionally with
their moments in the movie better than the original songs. Which while
still good, are not quite right lyrically and tonally for their respective
points in the storyline.

Wow, interesting reply. I think one day you should write a biography, too. You´d do a great job, you have a way with words and really know your stuff.

It´s funny that they renamed that Nikki character into Apollonia because the "Darling Nikki" scene and the lyrics would´ve made a bit more sense if they had stuck with the original name for that female character.I mean, just because Vanity jumped off board doesn´t mean they have to rename the character she was supposed to play. Then again, it´s a bit more subtle this way and not so "in your face".

Obviously the right choice, as far as the movie goes. But like already been said, it should have been officially released somewhere by now. Maybe crystal ball 2! I won't hold my breath!
