The big difference is, a Star Trek episode is the complete product, available to purchase. Of course no fan should have them available to freely download.

But the Prince videos are called "PROMOS". They are a tool to help sell albums. Mass publication of these helps acheive their purpose, that being, to sell albums.

For an artist to try and prevent viewings of their previously released promo's is simply a paranoid attempt to retrospectively control their image.

The users of HQ add the logo to the pictures they add to the site. On most ocassions it is not done by HQ themselves - so enough with this, "oh my god they raped the image rights/don't own the image rights/they want credit for the pics/they don't want credit for the pics" shit. That's very silly about being mad at Housquake.com mods for posting videos and pictures, Prince loses no income over low quality online videos or pics.

Housequake does not make any income off of it. there are no advertisers. It only promotes him further and theoretically creates more income for Prince through marketing. It also serves as a marketing test (to Prince's advantage) to see what aspects of his work are continuing to generate interest.

So in effect, the Prince machine has stepped into a happy prince party and ripped all the posters off the wall.

I don't think Prince owns the videos to everything that was taken off. He is not the owner of a video of a performance on a public show like David Letterman or an awards ceremony, or a press conference. He might have certain claim to the rights of his image, but it is the producers or corporations of those particular shows that hold those copyrights. And a press conference is free for all!

Music videos, he owns. The audio of his performance he owns... so they could, as a legal insult, have just taken off the audio and then censored him with a dot...

Has anyone considered the fact that Prince may not even be behind this? Think about this for a minute. Universal Publishing Company services his entire catalogue. They are in control of it. Writers and performers (like Prince) have a legal right to profit from royalties on their "public performances" (see the US Code for definition of public performances, very broad). So how does that affect Universal? Simple...licensing contracts pay royalties TO UNIVERSAL, who then takes a cut and sends Prince his share. Plain and simple. Yes, it is corporate america at its best. BUT, if corporate america was not collecting royalties on behalf of Prince, then it would be up to Prince to do it himself. You do know that everytime you hear a Prince song on the radio, played in a bar, played in a restaurant, etc. etc..(or even an associated artist song that prince wrote but didn't perform) he receives a royalty fee for that don't you? You do realize that when he does a public performance such as on SNL, he is paid royalties everytime the episode airs, etc.?

Dollars and cents....if royalties aren't paid, Universal doesn't make money off past musical performances (video or audio), if royalties aren't paid, Prince doesn't make money off past musical performances either.

I agree with you in this instance because of the on going dust up with other artists and their videos being pulled from YouTube by their record labels.
