Been listening to The Rainbow Children loads recently...

For some reason, I can't get enough right now of songs like 1+1+1 is 3, Family Name and Last December, amongst others on there!

I have a question, not intended to be controversial in any way, just out of curiousity. I am not religious in any way, or at least in any way I can control, so is my enjoyment of this album tempered somewhat by this? Would I appreciate it more if I appreciated religion more??

I personally feel it is EASILY one of the best albums Prince has made, in terms of musicianship, passion and lyrics.
So look into the mirror, do u recognise some1? Is it who u always hoped u would become, when u were young?

I don't think it would make any difference. hmmm

Sometimes I don't even know what Prince is talking about and I still enjoy this music.

I bought this album recently and I appreciated it more than b4 and those songs U mentioned r my favourite cool

And I feel the same way, I love it 'cause it sounds very sophisticated.

I love it cool

Religious or not, the MUSIC is top notch! His extended jam on The Rainbow Children blew me away. The jazzier style of the record had me on cloud 9.

I'm glad you enjoy it!

I would say that, like all art, The Rainbow Children is up to different viewer/listener interpretation. Lyrics can be written to mean one thing, and interpreted differently. Also, when experiencing art, a person can read more into the art than was intended. For example, some like to hear " I Would Die 4 U" as a love song from one lover to the other. Some interpret the lyrics to be Prince talking to us very literally from Jesus' point of view.

Ultimately, the music/art is yours to take and enjoy anyway you want to--regardless of what other people, including the artist, says it means.

I listened to the title track today and the last 2 minutes or so is one of the best! Can't believe I have never realised this.

I'm not overly fussy on some of the lyrics, but musically this is a fantastic cd.

The first time I heard, I knew it was a definite "Prince moment", you know what I mean? The kind of moment where you know you have been touched by the Purpleness!

I can't believe how far out there he took the solo, and still managed to bring it back.

Genius!

When I bought the album, I was expecting his usual type of music.I heard it and it was jazzy kind of sound. I loved it! Reminded me of the beach for some reason.

First time I heard it I actually thought it was boring trash haha. It took me quite a while before I actually liked it.

When I first got it, I didn't like it... then I attended ONA and experienced it LIVE.
I went home and listened to it with a different ear, and now it is EASILY my favorite album!!! nod

It is the only one I play from beginning to end without skipping anything. music

My fave: "Everlasting Now", with "1+1+1=3" as a close 2nd... cool

"Love Hurts.
Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

Muscially, I think it's great but I have troubles getting past the lyrics.

Spiritual/religious music doesn't bother me but where LoveSexy was very open and welcoming, TRC has a very exclusionary, elitist approach, imo.

TRC is a great album! Loved it from the start and is one of the very few Prince albums that I can listen to without skipping songs. Creatively and musically one of his best albums. The lyrics aren't too disturbing IMO but there definately would be better lyrics possible for these tracks. Still a very interesting album! cool

It's difficult to say if you would appreciate it more if you were religious...

I do know that I'm quite religious and this is one of my favorite albums from Prince. But, good music is good music and TRC can be appreciated regardless of your beliefs.

Listening to it yet again!!!

For some reason, I'm likening it to some sort of musical. Prince seemed interested in such an idea at one point, and I reckon TRC is the closest we'll get to that.
