Chaos & The Vault = Two Audio Turds

man, i'm mad late in getting these, and i see why i wasn't pressed. good thing i got them both used. i'm usually pretty lenient and usually find several songs on an album that i like, even if they are "hits" or not. but THESE two albums were awful. never thought i'd use that word to describe a Prince album, but i was like, what was he thinkin

The Vault is a 'turd'? Really?! Have you LISTENED to 'When the Lights Go Down'? The groove simmers at a sexy, low boil as P just NAILS the vocals. And how great is it to FINALLY have a clean sounding '5 Women', instead of the hissy boot that's circulated for years. The 'I'll Do Anything' songs sound GREAT (especially 'There is Lonley'). The band is SICK on 'She Spoke 2 Me', and though I prefer the early versions, I was SO HAPPY that the public finally got to hear 'Old Friends 4 Sale', which I believe to be one of Prince's true masterpieces.

I love The Vault - except for the first song and Sarah - 5 Women, Old Friends 4 Sale, When the lights go down... great songs - the only album of Prince's from the nineties that I still listen to.

Listened to Chaos and Disorder the other day for the first time in ages, not too keen on that.

i think both of these are easily prince's worst songwriting albums; very cliched and formulaic. i've never not had SOMETHING on a Prince album "grab" me on first listen. something to but the album again, so it CAN grow on me. so far here's what i appreciate. the melody to Dinner With Delores, the end of Old Friends for Sale, as far as a complete song that i like somewhat it might be Dig U Better Dead.

after reading sum praising of the vault, i decided to give it another spin, damn that sukka had 3inches of dust on it lol.

still gotta say it sounds as boring to me to TRC. oh well im obviously missing sumthing here.

Chaos is still great fun.

I can never understand this....

When the Lights Go Down is just one of the all time, underrated, best songs Prince ever recorded followed by Into the light>I Will

For this reason alone, I love these albums....

Personnally, I don't think he does enough LIVE Piano performance material... did you ever see that version of Electric Intercouse ? He Can do an entire show of just himself and a Piano and I would be PSYCHED!

Honestly, I thought that he would do that at Lincoln Center (April '03?) NYC to kick off his One Night Alone Tour...

BTW... Sometimes it Snows in April... on Easter 2007

I'm really not a great fan of The Vault, but it has a few highlights like all Prince's post-shit hot albums, maybe more than it's fair share even, I just never feel like listening to it.

C&D is a cracking album, only let down by a couple of tracks. Switch them for some CB stuff like Calhoun Square, What's My Name, Interactive or Da Bang, and you'd have one of the best 90s albums IMO.

I don't like 'Chaos and Disorder'.It sounds like a bland Lenny Kravitz album neutral "I Will" is a great track that belongs on a stronger album.

Now Chaos & Disorder is probably one of the worst Prince albums, tho still good. The Vault however has some of his best material!!

The problem with these two albus as they were "contractual obligations".

It sounds. Many songs are mediocre, negative and uninspired. But, Prince wouldn't be Prince, to still put some gems in there and play an otherwise crappy song like Right the wrong still pretty impressiveley with his band.

i guess there's room for everyone on the org, but i stand my ground. we'll see if time changes anything, but they sound like he called the band at 3 AM and said, i gotta submit something to Warner, by 7, let's do this. just follow my lead, i've been jottin' down lyrics here and there. audio turds, one with nuts in it. my ears stink

I suppose it depends on you expectations of a Prince album. Remember,
both those albums were 'contract fillers', so don't expect them to be jam
packed with hits. I view them like I view 'Crystal Ball' - interesting albums
of 'outtakes' not originally intended for release. A better way of thinking
of them would be as if they'd been labelled this way...

that's a good point. i recall the period and kinda thought they were contract fillers. i knew The Vault was old stuff (undigested turds i guess). but my expectations were up for Chaos because i recall seeing part of the vid. for Dinner with Delores and it stuck with me. I remember thinking, that's a nice, different sounding little ditty; wonder if there's more where that comes from. now i know. so to call it The Vault II: i would've lowered my expectations based on what that would imply

The Vault is not even a real album and you can't view it that way.

C&D is not his best, but I sorta like it. It really stands out from his other albums as something different and there are some good catchy songs on it

When The Lights Go Down and Chaos and Disorder are two
of the best songs Prince has ever done.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Exactly. Contractual obligations.

That being said there are still a couple of songs from C&D I like, and "When the Lights Go Down" is one of my favorite P songs.

that's how i look at it. to me, it's like an opposable thumb to the crystal ball boxed set. it's a collection of "odds'n'sods", which lots of artists release as contract fillers or stopgap releases to keep the fans pleased.

looking at it that way, i think 'the vault' is a great little grab bag of assorted stuff. it's good for the ol' shuffle play. smile

don't get it twisted fam, i'm NOT a newbie fan; just to these particular "albums" (using the word loosely). i'm an old school fan and not one who romanticizes about the "good ole days", as i like where Prince is now. i was just surprised at how bad these were. ok, i got it, the best way to describe the total songs, or PARTS of songs on these two joints that add up to something i MIGHT listen to again is 1 + 1 + 1 = 3.

It depends on one's perspective to turds.
To most people, they stink & are disgusting.
To a common housefly, however,
it's a funk-fest in it's purest form.
