aubergine said: The original version of The Dance is much cleaner, more sultry and has Prince sounding quite vulnerable. The new version has got a totally different vibe. I wonder the importance of this song, enough for him to rework and repackage it. He's never done it like this before. I love the original version, and the original was likely current to the time period it was released on The Chocolate Invasion. It makes most sense that this is a new song, new enough to have kept his emotions in the song going strong ... carrying over even stronger in the new 3121 version.
For those who say it's about a lost love, I think it's about a love that hasn't taken place yet. The phrase "I don't wanna see you dance cuz I don't even really wanna take the chance of falling in love with you" shows he's trying real hard not to like this person and fall in love. he's never seen her dance before and now he doesn't even want to take that chance of possibly falling in love by watching her. If it was an old love lost he was lamenting, he would have already been in love. The original had different intentions, the new one is about the continued mental temptation .... has he missed his opportunity? that's what's probably driving him mad! I don't wanna give you my love cuz I don't wanna loose my mind I don't wanna give you my love cuz if I do it's gonna be the last time I never wanna feel this way again if I can't be your lover I don't wanna be friends, no I don't wanna be friends, no I don't wanna hold your hand (I don't wanna hold your hand) cuz I just wanna follow you everywhere I don't wanna see you dance (no no no) cuz I don't een really wanna take the chance of falling in love with you baby cuz if you ever said those beautiful words to me if I wanna be your fantasy, yes I wanna dance, yes (ooh baby) I don't wanna give you my love I don't wanna go too fast cuz if I do you just might stay (stay with me) you just might stay I guess I have a lonely dance (do you wanna dance?) the longer that I feel this way (the longer that I feel this way) and I never wanna feel this way again (I don't wanna feel) if I can't be your lover (I don't wanna be just friends) no no no no no no no I don't wanna be friends no no no no no I just want this to end my my my, my my my my my baby oh yeah I don't wanna give you my love (I don't wanna give you my love) cuz I don't wanna loose my muse, loose loose my mind go home baby, you know you can't handle this. I disagree. to me it sounds like a love that was lost, and the woman wants to continue a friendship with him, asks him to come to a show where she is dancing... he already knows if he sees her dancing, it will stir up those old feelings. And the part about not wanting to feel that way again. Just sounds like it is love he already had, and is telling her, to get out of his life... he can't handle being close to her, because he will fall in love with her again. so this song comes from the Emancipation outtakes??? hmm, I wonder who the inspiration was. Maybe Carmen? At first I thought Mayte, but things were going well with Mayte during Emancipation, but maybe Carmen Electra?? Only Prince himself knows what the song's about.
But I think that it's about a love that hasn't happened yet... but it seems like this has been a girl he's been watching 4 a while. And due to past relationships, he's afraid to take that extra step. I feel kinda bad, cuz at the end, it sounds like she rejects him and he goes back into "Eye Hate U" mode (like during the latter portion of the courtroom scene in the song) and mixes a little bit of TB1's passion with his pleas... I limit my listens cuz it's kinda sad when u really think about it. But thanx to this thread, I have the song in my head right now, had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. I just listened 2 it the 2nd time today.
Prince really bears his soul in this song... so yeah, it might be too good for 3121, but I'm not totally sure. It's song like these that I really like because they allow Prince to tell me a story from his POV and feel exactly what he's feeling. Prince seems to be afraid to open his heart again. If I can't be ur lover, I don't wanna b ur friend That's a line he's often heard from his past girlfriends, every guy's gone thru it. A girl breaks up with him and says "but we can still be friends, right?" He's sick of hearing that same line. He wants to find love. In the beginning, he's afraid to take a chance, afraid his heart will get broken. Then he wants to fight 4 that love, but his other half doesn't agree. Then he goes into "Eye Hate U" mode, saying he can find someone else just as easily. Then his "It's just not fair" rant is asking "why can't I find a girl 4 me? That'll stay with me, etc." It's definitely a masterpiece, though. I love the combination of piano & flute that he uses, sheer brilliance. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong.
