The 1998 Tavis Smiley, BET Prince interview was smokin.

I forgot about this interview until I saw it again on Housequake. Tavis really asks some bold questions of our Prince. All the critical questions most other critics or interviewers avoided like the purple plague. He really lays into Prince, in fact. Prince seemed shocked by the line of questions, but really answered them; some with bullshit answers, some more coherently.

I really loved what he said about wannabees who went to the Purple Rain shows, then never came back. He never mentioned that before, but needed to. People jumped on a popular bandwagon, like they always do and Prince could sense it. Some newbies in here will probably end up being haters before long.

I also liked the question about why Prince wasn't more "cutting Edge." Prince gave what I thought was a bullshit answer when he said that he thought New Power Soul had some of the best stuff he has ever done. Obviously that is not true. Prince just cannot understand the difference between his dreck and his gems, like he no longer has a workable bullshit detector. But our Tavis understood. Surprised Smiley ever got another interview. hehe.

the best part is when he goes "..and i will ask for what i think i deserve.. because i think im great.. just great.. and hopefully somebody out there thinks im pretty great too"

that was the best answer he could give. Why not ask for the rolling stone cover? exactly, he asked for what he beleived he deserved.

It obviously has stuff which is equally as impressive...Along with The Black Album, this is one of Prince's best party albums.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

It seems wierd to me looking back at stuff from this period. Although Prince speaks a lot of truth about the industry, it often seems a lot of his talk is 'newspeak'. He says one thing, but his actions or motives in saying something say the polar opposite. Actually it's kind of depressing.

But very interesting because of that.
