I love "Papa" There was 1 September day that Papa worked 2 hard
First he crucified every dandelion out in the yard Then he screamed at baby twice 4 throwin' rocks at passin' cars Baby didn't listen, so like a priceless work of art He got snatched by his Papa who then opened up the closet door And pushed the four-year-old down, onto the closet floor Baby cried "I'm sorry, I won't do it no more" Papa said "Yeah, I know, that's what this here's 4" Smack! Ooh Papa... Smack! Smack! Ooh Papa...Papa... Smack! Ooh Papa... Smack! Smack! Ooh Papa...Papa... As the door closes, baby starts 2 cry "Please don't lock me up again, without a reason why" Papa just went outside and pointed a shotgun up in the sky He said "How come I don't love my woman?" Then he took aim and died Boom! Papa... Boom! Boom! Papa...Papa Boom! Papa... Boom! Boom! Papa...Papa... Don't abuse children, or else they turn out like me Fair 2 partly crazy, deep down we're all the same Every single 1 of us knows some kind of pain In the middle of all that's crazy, this 1 fact still remains If u love somebody, your life won't be in vain And there's always a rainbow, at the end of every rain

It struck me as very sad... but when I read the lyrics, you can definitely tell it was from the heart. A good Prince song is one where his is visible. And I thought this was a pretty good song. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

'Papa' is one of the gems of the 90s. Like proper 'top 3 90s tracks' material.

At first I thought it was too shocking and sad, but now I'm used to it, but still don't play it much. [Edited 4/12/07 9:35am]

Does anyone know the backstory on how Prince hooked up with the Broadway playwright who co-wrote the song? There are only a handful of instances of Prince sharing co-writing credits with another writer outside the Prince world (Carol Davis - "Slow Love")

I love this song but never really thought of it as sad. My cousin and i always thought it was kind of funny the way he would say "Smack ooh papa, smack smack ooh papa papa". Evertime she'd get in trouble wit her pops i'd sing that part 2 her and we'd crack up. When i listen 2 it by myself though it just seems 2 relax me the music is just so smooth! the whole album though really surviving on the thought of loving you, it's just like the water

I'd say I really only played this song about a dozen times . . .
I'm not saying it's not a great song (it is) - but it's one of those that once it's made it's point to me, I don't need to hear it again. Sorta like . . . The Passion Of The Christ . . . I had to see it, and it was extremely well done, but I don't need to see it again. It's not "entertainment" per se.

The video was a letdown since it was segued together with Loose (album & video). Him performing this in a club setting was bizarre.
Excellent song though "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

The lyric that always made me wonder was when Prince says, "Don't abuse children, or else they turn out like me." I makes me wonder if Prince was really abused as a child, or if he just wrote that lyric as part of the song. I've always loved "Papa" too, the music is kinda moody sounding, which adds to the vibe of the song. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
