"______" should have been the single!! Pick Prince's most momentum killing singles and what might've possibly (with the right video and promotion) worked better for album sales.
Just off the top of my head: "Play in the Sunshine" instead of "If I Was Your Girlfriend" "So Far So Pleased" instead of "Greatest Romance" "Let's Have a Baby" instead of "Holy River" "Daddy Pop" instead of "Money Don't Matter" "I Wanna Melt With U" instead of "Morning Papers" "Life Can Be So Nice" instead of "Mountains" "Lolita" instead of "Black Sweat" Y'all?

just to add a comment i don't know about you're last two choices. Life Can Be So Nice, although to a fan like me it's a great song, i don't know if the masses would have appreciated the uniqueness of it.
As for the last choice, the radio politics is weird now and I doubt any of Prince's songs will get radio play today. I think the worst mistake he did with 3121 was to release Te Amo first (ugh!)

Yet another thing we agree on. hahah I entered this world at a part b4 that happened, so I really can't comment on whether it made a good single or not. I just love Te Amo Corazon because its one of those songs of his where it connects him to me. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Here are my choices:
Housequake instead of If I Was Your Girlfriend Girls and Boys instead of Mountains Lovesexy instead of Glam Slam Vicki Waiting or Trust instead of The Arms of Orion The Continental instead of The Morning Papers P Control or Shy instead of Gold Sleep Around instead of Betcha By Golly Wow Soul Sanctuary or The Love We Make instead of The Holy River So Far So Pleased or Baby Knows instead of The Greatest Romance Ever Sold A Million Days instead of Cinnamon Girl Love instead of Te Amo Corazon Lolita instead of Fury This is not saying that these songs shouldn't have been singles but for me, they came too soon. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I would have said something against ur displacement of Gold. I know nothing of timing, really cuz I wasn't in this world at the time. A Million Days definitely have made a great single, love that song, my fav. off of Musicology. Love & The Word also should have been singles... but I do love Te Amo Corazon very much, so I can't speak out against it. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

I think it would have shocked us by becoming huge. Gold deserved to be a single but it would have been after P Control. People needed to be reminded that Prince could still make em dance and even be controversial because of the language of the song not just because of the name change at the time. Just my point of view. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Just my point of view. very good point. That would make a lot of sense if P. Control was the first single he released... with how racy it is and all. The contents were shocking, certainly not something I was accustomed to... but there was something about the beat & the music that made me like it from first listen on. If it was first, he would have given people a major shock. Heh, I'd pay to c that. But if that were the case, I wish I knew of him at the time... but then again, I would have been only 10 at the time... nah, that wouldnt have worked 4 me at that age. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. In Love instead of Soft & Wet
Anotherloverholenyohead instead of Mountains, then Girls and Boys and finally Mountains Housequake instead of If I Was Your Girlfriend LoveSexy instead of Glam Slam The album needed a whole new re-think of the selection: 7 The Max The Continental The Morning Papers/Damn U (Double-A with track one to Pop. track 2 to R&B) My Name Is Prince Dolphin instead of I Hate U Endorhpinemachine instead of Gold I Like It There instead of Delores Emancipation needed another rethink: Sleep Around Sex In The Summer Somebody's Somebody Face Down One Kiss At A Time Wherever U Go, What Ever U Do as a single from Rave A Million Days instead of Cinnamon Girl 3121: Black Sweat first... Love Te Amo Corazón Lolita

Love Te Amo Corazón Lolita I only know these areas and I've got quite a few things to say. Dolphin, I fell in love with over the weekend, so I agree it should be a single. Eye Hate U was also brilliant, though... ur lineup 4 3121 looks good... although "The Word" should be included Everyone here should know that I stand behind Gold 100%. Endorphinmachine took me the longest time to get into... I'm still adjusting to the vibe it carries, I cant describe what it is, though. Its power is a little frightening, I guess... but I'd never replace Gold with it... had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Dolphin, I fell in love with over the weekend, so I agree it should be a single. Eye Hate U was also brilliant, though... Eye Hate U is great, and could have been released later, but at that point Prince had had a string of slow songs as singles... The Morning Papers, Damn U, Pink Cashmere, The Most Beautiful Girl In The World, Letitgo... even Space wasn't very uplifting. So, I think introducing TGE with more down tempo songs just killed the momentum. ur lineup 4 3121 looks good... although "The Word" should be included
That's a great track too but am undecided if radio would touch it. Everyone here should know that I stand behind Gold 100%.

Its power is a little frightening, I guess... but I'd never replace Gold with it... The problem here is that with the gift of hindsight we see that Gold only reached 88 on the pop charts and a lowly 92 on R&B, as a follow up to Eye Hate U (12 and 3 on the charts) it just didn't work.

"Lovesexy" instead of "Glam Slam"---Many people blame the album cover for this album's poor sales, but I would argue that Prince killed the momentum by releasing a bland second single ("Glam Slam") instead of the dynamic, powerful title track.I really believe that "Lovesexy" would have done well as a single.
"Girls and Boys" instead of "Mountains"---the biggest, most obvious example of Prince choosing the wrong single. The album started tumbling down the charts when "Mountains" came out. "Paisley Park" instead of "America"---"America" is a good song, but I think "Paisley Park" is superior. "Housequake" instead of "If I Was Your Girlfriend"---Don't get me wrong,I love "If I Was Your Girlfriend".I just don't think it was suited to be a single and not surprisingly,it bombed on U.S. radio. The subject matter was too controversial and most listeners had no idea what Prince was talking about, lol. The more uptempo "Housequake" would have worked better as the single. "The Future" instead of "Scandalous"--- "And God Created Woman" instead of "The Morning Papers"---I think "The Morning Papers" is a boring, uneventful song. There are so many better tracks on the album! "Sleep Around" instead of "Betcha By Golly Wow" "Private Joy" instead of "Do Me Baby"---"Private Joy" is the best song on 'Controversy'.If released as a single,it probably would have been Prince's first real "pop/crossover" hit.The MTV crowd would have went crazy over it. Actually no... but it doesn't hurt to dream, I suppose. It wouldn't have worked for me when it was released, though (I was only 10... the thought of being exposed to something like that at that age... I'd have been scarred 4 life). There was a pretty good reason why the lyrics weren't included with the album... and the title was shortened to P. Control had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. Girls and boys, P control, Dolphin, Endorphinmachine, Paisley Park, and The future were all released as singles at one point or another. Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.
