Prince has every right to say whatever he wants about these two. They sampled him after all.

Well, what JT says is true. From a pure sales perspective Prince in 2006/7 isn't selling as much as JT in 2006/7, BUT keep in Prince was Justin's age when he recorded Purple Rain, which outsold "FutureSex" by fathoms and is still cited as one of the most influential albums of all time.

Now, comparing apples to apples, let's see how many units JT will be moving in when he's 48, if he's even still around in the biz.

I made this point before in another thread, but I'll say it again, Prince can still perform songs from the "Purple Rain" album 22 years after its release and get a crowd hyped up. There's not a single song on "FutureSex" that will get much of a reaction 22 years from now. Let's see JT play "SexyBack" at the Superbowl in 2029, and see if the crowd joins him in unison the way they did Prince when he performed "Purple Rain".

And the fact is, today's music climate isn't kind to its geniuses. Joni Mitchell was never a "good charter". Nina Simone never topped the Hot 100. The likes of Sufjan Stevens and Ani DiFranco aren't household names--even though they put out alubms that are better than anything by Pussycat Dolls, for example.

Don't forget about the acts that outsold Prince's offerings in the early '90s. Vanilla Ice's "To the Extreme" sold better than Prince's offering of the same year--as did albums from the likes of MC Hammer, Color Me Badd, and Ace of Base. And where are all these acts now?

"Charting" may be good for short-term success, but genius ensures longevity.
