I always wondered what was up with the Tevin Campbell bit. The 'Round and Round' routine was one of the highlights of the film. I thought it was leading to something, but then he's just written out of the rest of the film. Oh well. Whoever said it's just a loosely connected series of music videos is probably right. Too bad we have to sit through such a crappy story to get to them. I'm afraid of Americans. I'm afraid of the world.

his performance of the song on arsenio hall show with the npg backing him was a classic moment... the band was even tighter that night than they were when prince returned for his 1991 show.

my question is...why did morris, jerome and aura get in the car at pandemonium (followed by Prince on motorcycle) drive around the city only to come right back to pandemonium? other than finding a reason to do the thieves in the temple video in between..what was the point?

Questions: -Did the feather represent anything? IMO, the feather could represent fate. Graffiti Bridge doesn't represent an escape or solace. Rather it represents the path to God. It also represents Love. In many of Prince's songs, when he sings of Love, he is singing about God. tznekbsbfrvr said: -Maybe we can have a nice discussion abt the film as well. I loved the music (except for the Tevin kid- he got annoying after a while- and I have no idea why he's in the film in the first place). Neways, lemme know.
I loved this film because it is so rich with its symbols. Everytime I watch it, I catch something else. Keep in mind as well that at this time Prince was very spiritual, and much of what he sang about involved finding God within you, not outside of you. During this time Prince was deep into meditation and many of the symbols within his lyrics at this time (and even today in many of his songs) are things that someone who has delved deep into meditation has experienced/witnessed. thanks so much for answering my questions. I kind of understand the movie a bit better. "So shall it be written, so shall it be sung..."

A lot of people can't get past the cringe factor of Graffitti Bridge, but you can still eke out some morsels of insight.
The whole thing is psychodrama, a look into what's going on inside Prince's head. Kid the music man must stop Morris the money man from devouring everything and everyone around him. The movie is obsessed with money. "We got to make mo' money!" announces The Time. Morris and Jerome compete in a 'money-off.' Henchmen bring suitcases packed with money. Robin snags a wad of bills from Morris's hand. Tevin collects bills from a street performance. Everywhere money is bandied about, except when Kid is onscreen. He's all about sheet music with "God" and "spirit" in the titles. He likes to paint pretty poems on his brick wall and ride around on his motorcycle. He seems to live in a moneyless world. When Morris's crew destroys his club, it's magically rebuilt overnight without any apparent expenditure in labor or materials. And the brainboggling deus ex machina climax that had test audiences rolling with guffaws: Aura, the divine agent of light and inspiration, walks into traffic and gets pulverized by a Jeep Cherokee. There's something more than a little misogynistic about a movie that kills off the female lead so a musician can keep his club. And consider the other female speaking parts: a possessive nag (Robin Powers), an opportunistic tramp (Jill Jones), an ineffectual matriarch (Mavis Staples), and of course the mystical troll living under a bridge (Ingrid Chavez)--it doesn't exactly add up to the most enlightened view of women. Plus, the scene where Morris intoxicates Aura and shuttles her home is extremely unpleasant, as is Kid's "rescue." Almost as vile as the throwing-a-woman-in-a-dumpster scene from Purple Rain. Actually, it's a note for note replay of the scene where Kid abducts Appollonia after Morris gets her drunk in an alley. What could be chalked up as naivete in his '84 film debut won't get such benefit the second go around, when he's established, in total creative control, and ought to know better. Serious issues like date rape, abduction and death are glossed over, as if these things have no real life consequences. And that's just it. Nothing about the movie bears any resemblance to reality. It's Prince's own little world, where music solves all problems, money don't matter, and beautiful women fall out of the sky to sacrifice themselves for Prince. Graffitti Bridge throws serious doubt on Prince's reputation as genius, ladies' man, and sane person, for he seems completely oblivious as to just how callous his portrayal of women and death and money really is.
