I always wondered what was up with the Tevin Campbell bit. The 'Round and Round' routine was one of the highlights of the film. I thought it was leading to something, but then he's just written out of the rest of the film. Oh well. Whoever said it's just a loosely connected series of music videos is probably right. Too bad we have to sit through such a crappy story to get to them.

his performance of the song on arsenio hall show with the npg backing him was a classic moment... the band was even tighter that night than they were when prince returned for his 1991 show.

my question is...why did morris, jerome and aura get in the car at pandemonium (followed by Prince on motorcycle) drive around the city only to come right back to pandemonium? other than finding a reason to do the thieves in the temple video in between..what was the point? mad

Well, I saw Graffiti Bridge last night on the Netflix Instant Viewing thing... and while I liked the movie very much I am SOOO confused. I have so many questions that I can't seem to figure out. I'll post a few below...if anyone is a fan of this movie or knows somethin, clue me in!

Questions:
-Did the feather represent anything?

IMO, the feather could represent fate.

Graffiti Bridge doesn't represent an escape or solace. Rather it represents the path to God. It also represents Love. In many of Prince's songs, when he sings of Love, he is singing about God.

I loved this film because it is so rich with its symbols. Everytime I watch it, I catch something else. Keep in mind as well that at this time Prince was very spiritual, and much of what he sang about involved finding God within you, not outside of you. During this time Prince was deep into meditation and many of the symbols within his lyrics at this time (and even today in many of his songs) are things that someone who has delved deep into meditation has experienced/witnessed.

thanks so much for answering my questions. I kind of understand the movie a bit better.

And I just noticed that the symbol is on his Motorcycle on the cover of the Purple Rain movie. I didn't realize he's been using the symbol for so long.

Yeah, I think it's either in the Prince.org and/or Housequake.com FAQ section. One (or both?) has a picture of it. It was unsafe, and has since been torn down. Dig around....I bet it'll come up for you.

A lot of people can't get past the cringe factor of Graffitti Bridge, but you can still eke out some morsels of insight.

The whole thing is psychodrama, a look into what's going on inside Prince's head. Kid the music man must stop Morris the money man from devouring everything and everyone around him.

The movie is obsessed with money. "We got to make mo' money!" announces The Time. Morris and Jerome compete in a 'money-off.' Henchmen bring suitcases packed with money. Robin snags a wad of bills from Morris's hand. Tevin collects bills from a street performance. Everywhere money is bandied about, except when Kid is onscreen. He's all about sheet music with "God" and "spirit" in the titles. He likes to paint pretty poems on his brick wall and ride around on his motorcycle. He seems to live in a moneyless world. When Morris's crew destroys his club, it's magically rebuilt overnight without any apparent expenditure in labor or materials.

And the brainboggling deus ex machina climax that had test audiences rolling with guffaws: Aura, the divine agent of light and inspiration, walks into traffic and gets pulverized by a Jeep Cherokee. There's something more than a little misogynistic about a movie that kills off the female lead so a musician can keep his club. And consider the other female speaking parts: a possessive nag (Robin Powers), an opportunistic tramp (Jill Jones), an ineffectual matriarch (Mavis Staples), and of course the mystical troll living under a bridge (Ingrid Chavez)--it doesn't exactly add up to the most enlightened view of women.

Plus, the scene where Morris intoxicates Aura and shuttles her home is extremely unpleasant, as is Kid's "rescue." Almost as vile as the throwing-a-woman-in-a-dumpster scene from Purple Rain. Actually, it's a note for note replay of the scene where Kid abducts Appollonia after Morris gets her drunk in an alley. What could be chalked up as naivete in his '84 film debut won't get such benefit the second go around, when he's established, in total creative control, and ought to know better.

Serious issues like date rape, abduction and death are glossed over, as if these things have no real life consequences. And that's just it. Nothing about the movie bears any resemblance to reality. It's Prince's own little world, where music solves all problems, money don't matter, and beautiful women fall out of the sky to sacrifice themselves for Prince. Graffitti Bridge throws serious doubt on Prince's reputation as genius, ladies' man, and sane person, for he seems completely oblivious as to just how callous his portrayal of women and death and money really is.

-Why is Tevin Cambell (sp?) in this film?
-Is Melody Cool the name of a club or the name of that woman- or both? And why is it that the "Melody Cool" neon lights are lit up a few times?
-Is the Graffiti Bridge supposed to represnt solace, an escape? If not, what does it represnt?

Maybe we can have a nice discussion abt the film as well. I loved the music (except for the Tevin kid- he got annoying after a while- and I have no idea why he's in the film in the first place). Neways, lemme know.

allow B this moment 2 step on thru ~ 2 speak from my heart & talk 4
True....perhaps what eye say may reasonate with U smile

truly this one celebrates the proliferation of movies like: Ghost, What
dreams may come, Sixth sense, Powder & The Others, network TV show Highway
to heaven, Medium & Hero's which seek 2 portray those of us that have
different experiences N this world which we all live ~ 4 those who seek
understanding of such events these productions may offer a 1st step 2ward
awareness & acceptance of such realities...personally...Graffiti Bridge
rates as an egregious omission on this list...possibly due 2 the absence of
the 'other' side of this story...."there's this gyrl....i think she's trying
2 tell me something..." (duh!)

N my strange But True reality a WB exe was asking B what his project was
about while it was filming, that 1st scene validated what i tried 2
explain...like all of us eye came N2 this world with gifts &
abilities....Heaven honored B with phenominal teachers that guided B 2
places of harmony with those energies ~ Hero's TV show struck my attention N
an episode where a guy explained how he managed invisability that spoke of
elements of my instruction (it was happening naturally B4 i understood how)
Graffiti Bridge sketched many experiences that eye thought only eye was
aware of...here's my very personal interpretation:

PREMISE:*1984-1998 (when eye understood) whenever this little man & B were N
the same city there was a Thunderstorm (my relationship with lightning) &
that may explain the use of those elements throughout the
production...filmed almost entirely on the Paisley Park soundstage its a
reflection of this artist' personal inner world: Morris' charactor
reflecting his 'outer' self & the Kid's charactor his inner/Spiritual
self...N this scenerio comes one gyrl who will do 'whatever Heaven asks' 2
heal the conflict Btween them 4 both hear & see her...regarding your
questions =

#1: the feather = may have fallen from the wing of an angel changing form 2
walk the earth plane ("R there really angels or R they just N our minds?")
or the Egyptian Maat = the heart must balance with a feather 2 B judged as
True...

#2: Invisibility = there are various levels, a few comprise: physically
present & unseen, astral travel where the body is N one place yet the
senses(smell, sound, sight, temperature) R present @ a different location,
Dreamwalking where the Spirit energy appears while the body is a rest (not
necessarily asleep)

#3: Aura's voice: is the naturally unavoidable telepathic communication
that occurs Btween her & the Kid ~ its a bit more prominent when she's
actually N the scene (cuz when that guy & B find themselves N the same area
it gets way Byond the control of the both!)

#4: Tevin.....hmmm...a reflected 'ideal' of a younger version of the
Kid?(we were 13 when we 1st met) that is not necessarily an accurate
recollection of his childhood experience (Tevin was a 'hot ticket' 4
projects @ the time & perhaps P 'beat out' another who wanted Tevin....N
his...plans)

#5: Melody Cool = name of the woman & the club, perhaps another Aura
reflection (eye say Bcuz of the lyrics) ~ 4 B the Steele family N those
scenes was significant 4 events that had happened some years prior (& the
summer following) the films release...

#6: lighting of the sign - could B intentional or the tech folk might have been overwhelmed (heard editing was....quite challenging!)

#7: ahhh....the Bridge.....the 'location'of it & that 1st scene eradicated
any doubt regarding what eye choose 2 share here now...N my queendom the
location of the Bridge is referred 2 as "the place where only we had
been..." eye can not explain 2 U how 2 get there...these scenes felt
artificial & closed N 4 it was not depicted out of doors amidts cool green
pines & a giggling stream N a forest upon a mountain: shooting it Nside
extracted the whole vibe of those exchanges!!! what did they 'do' there? did
U pick up on the 'sharing the apple' analogy? (adam & eve anyone?) after the
feather flew the last time & Aura died didn't the Kid go 2 the Bridge & talk
2 her about a tendancy he displayed often thru the film?

....some have said this was 2 continue the story from where Purple Rain left
off....some said it was the Artist' way of explaining 2 himself these very
real occurances that we share...events depicted N the film started N earnest
from December 1984 on (shared Dreams & the like)...make note that amoung
other talents eye do write poetry N colors (he said he liked it)....Aura &
the Kid NEVER kissed or had real intimate contact Byond dry humping against
the wall (consistant with my experience with the exception of humping-dry or
otherwise) wink

so there's my partial interpretation from the Bridge & wylder than anything
eye have tried 2 share of my perspective is that as Heaven demands = it ain't
over smile

Like I said if you think those lips look way too big,you need to get out more.
Or maybe you're only used to people who have very thin lips like Mani, and if that's the case-then Prince,Jill Jones,Nona Gaye,Kim Basinger,Boni Boyer,Mayte and hundreds of other people have WAY too big lips as well.
I was just watching GB,and Morris & Prince's lips look thicker than Robins. wacky
