Who is Prince's best backup bassist?

Okay ladies and gentlemen. The nominees are: Andre Cymone, Brown Mark, Levi Seacer Jr., and Rhonda Smith. My pick would have to go to Levi but only slightly. Not that Levi is any better to me than the others but I think his longevity with Prince speaks volumes in itself. I never saw Andre in concert with Prince. I saw Mark, Rhonda, as well as Levi and they're all good to me. But Levi's been around the longest so I'll pick him. Peace! Who would you pick?

Prince was probably his own best back up bassist. I'm sure he would agree. wink

Well alot of the songs Sonny played on featured some of the best basslines Prince ever had, and he was clearly more skilled than the rest.

Andre Cymone, without a doubt. He was as good as Prince in many aspects. His 1985 release "A.C." is a must have for any Prince fan....

why the descriptor back-up?

Larry Graham's influence on his instrument and from there Popular Music cannot be denied. He is simply one of the most innovative musicians ever. His approach to the Bass Guitar has changed the way we listen to and too what we listen on popular music. It is also likely that the instruments construction has changed because of the way he thought to interact with his Fender Jazz.

there must be at least 100 "Name" bassists who owe Mr Graham big time.

Stanley Clarke, Louis Johnson and maybe Chuck Rainey can probably join the originators of this technique which sadly many players now see as a style and of its-self.

back on topic, Levi is so good I named my first son after him.
his Guitar solo on Sexy MF is that too.

my other fav is Sonny. I just really like Undertaker and Come.
not so much his sound (too much twang, Hartke and Warwick???) but I really rate his feel and his partnership with Bland. I do think they play together smart.
they think and feel, nearly always a killer combonation.

Toss up between Levi, Rhonda, and Andre depending on what sound you wanted.
