Mika talks about Prince

Lebanese pop singer MIKA is annoyed at questions regarding his sexuality, insisting being a pop star has nothing to do with who they sleep with. The GRACE KELLY singer, who refuses to answer questions about his own sexual orientation, claims that legendary pop stars DAVID BOWIE and PRINCE were famed for their "beauty" and not necessarily their sexuality. The 23-year-old says, "Sexuality in pop is genderless. If you look at icons such as Bowie or Prince, has it got to do with actual sexual orientation? No Has it got to do with style, beauty and class, irrelevant to whether you want to f**k them? Yes."

So what do u think?

I think the point he's making is we are not supposed to care, it's irrelevant to the music. Just for the record, it does go without saying that Mika is obviously, unquestionably, undoubtably crap. lol

They are famed for their music, their gender-bending image was just what brought it to the fore at the time, in the climate of sexual, political or cultural revolution. Right time, right image, great music.

Mika is getting by on being a prissy queen stop-gap for NME and Q readers who are bored with Keiser Chiefs and yet another 47 page pullout on the last days of Nirvana.

I haven't heard this guy yet, but I've heard a lot about him. I'll have to check him out when I get home from work. It would figure that he was gay, because almost every man I find attractive is! lol He is kinda cute...

i'm so tired of that line from celebrities, yet it's a big deal that he's from whatever country or that he's of whatever nationality or any number of other qualities he may possess. why can't he just say "yeah, i'm gay, whatever, like my socks?" instead of acting like it has to remain some big mystery? i'm not all into the whole forced-outing thing, but i'm really tired of public figures who are very clearly gay doing one thing in public and then saying another thing to the press. i don't think he's going to lose his bible belt butch hetero fan base if he just came out of the closet. shit. i mean, suze orman came out of the closet this year and nobody cared! lol

Though Mika seems, for the most part, as queer as a $2 bill, he is right. Sexuality shouldn't matter in music. If it's good, then that's all that matters. Personally, I don't care which way Mika swings(which Im pretty sure is gay, but people were saying the same shit about Prince back in the day so who knows..). His CD is the best CD I've heard in a LONG time, and that's all that matters.

I don't think that big of a fuss is made about it though. I think people just kinda assume it. You know, like Elton John. Everyone knows he's a big queen, but his music has made such an impact(and still does) that it hardly matters much. But like I said, Prince looked alot more feminine and actually wore high heels back in the day, yet he's not gay. So until there's concrete proof, who knows?

Good question, but I think that the mere mention of Prince's name causes no news to all of a sudden be good news. Especially now that the Prince camp is pretty dry. I don't even know anything about this Mika dude except Perez Hilton writes about him sometimes. And this certainly isn't relevant to Prince's music. (Nor does the dude 'talk' about Prince.)

then just mentioning it shouldn't matter, just like mentioning he's right or left handed or whatever his birth sign is shouldn't matter. that's my point. if it's visible in his music and if it's visible in the public persona he's putting out there, just freakin' SAY it and do something positive with the visibility instead of going the same tired route as liberace and rock hudson. those days are over. nobody cares who's gay or straight anymore and i think people respect you more these days if you're just open about who you are. the people who would hate someone like mika for being openly out aren't gonna listen to his music anyway.

i just wish people would act like it's the freakin 21st century, shit.

Well he did mention 2 Iconic figures that were flamboyant, androgenous and for the most part straight. Although his manuverings around the question seem to imply that he is gay.

I dunno. I like thinking of him as straight for now. I fear if he were to come out or something, it'd take the mystery away and he may become pigeonholed. I liked flamboyant/stright Prince growing up. And of course this is coming from someone who thinks that if you're gay, you should be out.

Here's a more general question. Do many artists that come out as gay keep their straight followings? For me it seems the moment an arist identifies his sexuality it almost immediately identifies his music and more so the people that listen to it and who it's marketed to.
