A better Musician certainly.

But a better song writer? Maybe technically, but I think he's too comfortable in his skin now. shrug

Well, I think Prince has never stopped stretching or growing as a musician. He may not be expanding his musical repetoire as rapidly as in the 80's, but he is constantly retooling his sound and redefining it.

I think that as fans, we have become use to Prince- so it is hard for him to surprise us anymore--that's not his fault it's just how things are.

Also, I believe that his song writing is a strong as ever, but his production techniques do not seem as constantly adventurous as they once were.

So to answer the question I think that Prince, like most great artists, ebb and flow with their creativity. It's not a question about then vs. now, but a question of what "Prince era" you are discussing.
