I mentioned that I was a Prince fan when I had an important job interview on this past Wednesday! Has anyone done this?

I had a series of interviews for a temporary job for NavTeq (one month and half). On the last interview the boss of the local section of NavTeq asked what my hobbies were. He asked that in English in order to test my fluency on the language.

I said in english that my hobbies were mainly concentrated on music and that I was a Huge Prince fan!

He replied back:

"It figures!"

eek eek eek eek

When I left from the interview I thought to things:

1. I fucked it up by saying I was a Prince fan and I could have made it worst if I replied instead that I'm also a huge madonna fan

2. People must have an image of what a Prince fan looks like!

Well...I got the job and I start this monday... biggrin

hilarious...

Oddly, I find it hard to bring Prince into conversation, simply because I'm afraid that once I start, I won't be able to stop. It'll just keep coming up like (excuse me, Prince if this sounds offensive) "word vomit".

Yeah, I think people have an image about what Prince "fans" look like... they don't understand him most of the time, so I suppose they don't understand why people are into him.

man... I really can't use the word "fan" in Prince conversation anymore... 4 some reason, it sickens me... his Greatness is rubbing off on me lol

A lot of people don't understand Prince and what they do know about him is negative, so I don't mention it.

Some of my friends complain that everytime we are discussing music, I always end up brigging prince into it and always making connections to him!

I also use this phrase alot:

"Prince eats major pussy and it takes a real man to wear those heels!"

Haters and the ignorant are just close-minded.

If anything, Prince has made me more open-minded about too many things 2 name.

Having his music in your life is full of benefits. I don't know how many other ways to spell it out, but it's a pity that people diss him b4 they get to know him.

Well, I tried this tack the other week, when I had an interview to be Prince's new keyboard player, but it didn't seem to cut any ice with 'The Man' lol.

nod

ditto. It's hard to bring up, and with all the unfounded negativity surrounding him I always feel as though I have to justify him to people, and then by justifying him to feel I come up sounding like a whacko. smile

I would just tell somebody that I'm a huge music fan, I'd mention what I value in artists, that I devote a lot of time to my music, and if pressed, I'll provide a list of artists that I like, including Prince, but he'll always be mentioned somewhere in the middle. smile smile

shameful, I know. neutral

I did, but he still seemed unimpressed. It's true what they say, he's hard to please.

Then he came into the rehearsal wearing his, and I could see it was all over. lol

Yeah, it's hard to be really open about Prince... but I feel that he'd want us to be as open about our love 4 him as he is open with his music.

I haven't had any confrontations yet about him. If people say that they're not into him, I say that's cool... he's not the easiest person to get into. But if they start throwing insults, I'd defend him and justify it with what his songs have done for me, etc.
Prince is always open and I think he'd want the same for us.

Everyone at work knows I've been onstage with Prince. Hell, they think I'm extra-cool because of it.

Little do they know what a dork I am, LOL.

I don't care what HE would want. I want to enjoy his music in private if it saves me the hassle of all the stupid comments surrounding him razz

Good for you mentioning it and getting the job.

Of course, if you wanted to really show how much of a Prince fan you are, the conversation could have gone something like this:

"Yeah, I'm a Prince fan. It's kind of crazy that you asked me to come in on Wednesday of all days [laughs]... [then, realizing they don't get the connection:] Wednesday is an unreleased track from Purple Rain, remember? It was going to be sung by Jill Jones in the movie. It's never been released and it's not even circulating among bootleggers. Do you know where I can get a copy? Oh, wait, sorry, I have to leave - it's 3:19 - time for me to pray 7 Hundalasiliahs in the direction of Paisley Park. You have been funked by MikeMatronik - Peace!"

I always find a way 2 mention the Prince thing esp. 2 new people. A couple of years back I was being investigated for an Air Force Bull Shi* thing and the worst thing that govt. lawyers said they could find out about me was that I was a huge Prince fan...I had to laugh even though I still hate those bastards...

I know... since when are we [as Prince's faithful followers] a type?

That's just not cool.

Then again, u could argue that I'm the type. I get into the weirdest things (animé to name 1) and I'm nowhere near a conformist when it comes to the music I listen 2... Prince only adds 2 that...

I find it odd to mention musical taste at a job interview unless you're getting a job in the entertainment field. shrug But since you got the job then good for you. Congrats. smile

haha.. hilarious .. Congrats on your new job thumbs up! ..

I have a similar story, slightly different ..

I had to turn in a time sheet and everyone in payroll went home so one of the higher bosses had to take care of it .. was a VP of the office ..

mostly all the employees went home, so he was totally caught off guard when I went to his office..

when I went to this dude's office (no lie) .. he was blasting Prince's "Head" in his office and had the Dirty Mind CD propped up on his computer and had a eek look on his face when I walked in lol .. .. he was fumbling, turned music off, puttin' CD away, and said .." biggrin How may I help you?"
