Mike Scott talks about Prince in the new Guitar Player magazine

"One night Prince's guitar went out a half a bar before his big solo on "Purple Rain" so he had me take the solo. I tore the ass out of that thing. Afterwards, he said, 'You'll never take that solo again.'"[Laughs].

Cool write up in the Master Class section of the May 2007 Guitar Player magazine with 10 music examples written out.

Just came out.

Yeah sure... and it was probably played with about 23% of the soul that Prince would have put into it.

Prince has commented several times about his admiration for Scott's playing. He can do things that Prince is unable to do, particularly his jazz chops. Prince's comment after the show reveals that he was obviously blown away with the solo. Your comment is made without even hearing it. Prince is a BADDDD guitar man and i agree he plays with a lot of soul. However, it would be wrong to assume that he is the only one

One puzzling thing though... If Princes guitar went out a half (tone?) then why not just play the solo up a fret? thus reverting to the natural key? Or do you think Mike scott means Prince's guitar went out (aka cut out) half a bar before the solo was to start?

Either way, i think it would inject some new life into the song having a band member take the solo. Would have loved to hear it.

I know we all love Prince around here, but we have to realize there are people guitar players out there. Doesn't diminish the talent that Prince has one bit.

Prince isn't the baddest guitar player on the planet but if you take in account everything else he can do he's the baddest all around performer I'll ever live to see.

So let me introduce myself properly...

I AM a guitar player, and play several other instruments.

I dig Mike's talent on the guitar.

He's one of the best guitarists Prince has had in his band.

I PREFER Prince's style, and 4 that matter, Miko's 2.

I am a Funk musician. I go by feel.

With all respect 2 Mike's chops, Prince has the feel I dig... both on rythym and lead.

That's all... 4 now.

Peace.

I mean rythmicly, melodically, and harmonically, I like Prince's choices.

Technically, Mike has great chops, and I've even seen him sitting in with cats I know in small clubs in D.C.

I like Mike.

But i just don't like that that is the only thing he can say about Prince, regarding guitar.

Dig?

No he meant Prince's guitar stopped working a half a bar before the guitar solo...

I bet it was just it sounded different. And that is prince's baby. So no matter how well Mike played it, it wound not sound right to prince.
