Prince: The Dancer

I saw a show on BET 2day about the top 25 dancers. Prince rated #6. I don't deny Prince's prowess as a dancer but 6 out of 25? Prince over Savion Glover and Gregory Hines? Prince's live shows (especially circa SOTT) always had great dancing, sure, and videos like Kiss and Cream had awesome choreography, but 6 out of 25? As a lyricist and musician Prince is an undeniable genius, and while acting is obviously his weakest talent, I don't think his dancing is top 10 of all time worthy. Am I just trippin? . . .

Ask yourself this--is James Brown really THE best dancer on this list? Is he technincally more sound, or doing moves that are more difficult in his dancing than ,say, Gregory Hines? I don't think he is. In fact, I think MJ does moves that are more difficult than James.

However, this BET thang seems to be weigh style heavily. If style counts for points, James Brown DOES deserve to be #1 and Prince also deserves to be in the top 10.It's not what they did/do it's how they do it.

2 true...you can do the same moves over and over, but artists like James and Prince made it their own.

I say James Brown did deserve #1 only becuz he was the trendsetter. Prince, I was pleased with his position on the list (though I could argue against the few that beat him... Michael Jackson beat him out again... but he did create the Moon Walk...)... I didnt like the fact they emphasized over and over how "sexy" his dancing is... that's more to it than that, it's certainly not the thing I look at it (the splits I look at, they're awesome).
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

nod I said the SAME damn thing like "How YOU gon' be #4 when you haven't been around long enough to have any kind of impact and your WHOLE style is stolen from Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal video." Between him and Usher, I'm tired of seeing the same MJ videos reincarnated. I'm so sick of the lack of creativity in today's "performers." Can you try coming up with your own shit instead of biting someone else's style? Perfect example, when they showed Beyonce the commentators noted that she totally bit her style from Tina Turner. I guess that's what happens when you're a studio fabrication instead of a talented artist with your own vision and style.

Otherwise, I actually liked the list and was shocked that they put Prince as high as they did. JB deservedly got 1st place because he was the first mainstream performer to express his soul, sexuality, and music with his dance moves and he inspired almost everyone else on the list. Plus, JB didn't have a blueprint he was 100% original and unique in his performance style. So he should rightfully be #1.
