What Prince album should I buy next?

My first Prince albums were actually two that I bought;

Lovesexy and 1999

Then 3121,

afterwards Musicology followed then I recently bought Purple Rain, Sign of the Times and Around the World in A Day

Im not sure which Prince album i should buy next; I really should digest ATWAD and Purple Rain, but I want to hear more songs like Tamborine,Eye No, Dance On, Sign of The Times, Computer Blue, I'm really feeling his funky bluesy stuff. So based of those songs, what album should I pick up next? I'm counting on ya'll! razz

Controversy is a good album and Prince and For You. I started with Purple Rain first and then worked my way from this 1st album all the way to now.

Darn, I can't wait until I'm in a better position to give advice.

Everyone here's been so helpful to me. They convinced me to pick up TGE, and while I've yet to decide where it stands with my other albums (PR, Musicology & 3121), it has some special pieces of a particular quality that I don't see in any of the other albums.

I'm still collecting albums myself (I gotta wait until I come into more money, lol), but I'll do by what I can find at FYE (has the best selection of any of the places near me, but then again, a Best Buy is gonna open up near my house in a few months).

But whatever fate hands me, I'll take it. But I have a few in mind that I want to get myself at some point.

prince, prince I say... and again prince. This album is all over the map, stylistically, so there's something for everyone. The complexity of the musical arrangement goes beyond even that of LoveSexy, the lyrics are possibly the best Prince has ever written overall, and it's probably full of more funk and irresistible hooks than exist in the entire catalog of other some other artists.

then The Gold Experience...

I would go with The Hits/The Bsides next.. When you get that Cd set, really focus on listening to Disc 1 & 2. Find the songs you really like the most and when your ready to buy another CD after that, go and get the orginal album that your favorate track appeared on.

It's a good way to start on the early stuff. As far as newer stuff, I've been a bad Prince fan and lost touch after his stuff was only availibe threw NPGclub and stopped buying cause lack of credit card.

Same with me, actually; I picked up 3121 cause I heard Prince was a genius, and I liked a lot of that album, so then I just started picked up his most famous sounding albums like 1999. I had to pick up Lovesexy when I saw it; very bold cover, lol. Now that I've come into some more cash, I want to digest his best music

Yeah, I wanted to limit my collection to "The best" of what Prince has to offer... but the albums I wanted to get, everyone kept saying that he's done better. I'm not at all disappointed with any of the albums I have (although TGE is extremely difficult to get away from when I start playing it).

People recommended TGE to me as being among the best. I'm no position to make that call, at least not for a while. But there's a reason why I found it used & in mint condition.
I'm looking for albums that kinda represent different periods of his journey.
I want Emancipation to hear his first album in freedom. I want Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic moreso becuz I feel like there's a special bond I have with the Prince behind that album. Diamonds & Pearls, I figure is a safe, but great bet because I'm already familiar with a few of the tracks. (I used the same reason for getting 3121 and it's worked for me).

I've got a question.

Everyone's been talking about the infamous "Black album" here...

How does it compare to TGE? I can understand why everyone recommended TGE to me. It's very special, but it's so addictive. I only get afraid to play it becuz I don't know when/if I'll be able to stop.

Is it that much more superior to my other albums?

I've yet to figure that out.

but just go to a second hand cd shop and buy anything you can find. this is the best way of getting more music for little money, then if you dont like something, atleast you didnt spend a fortune.....

...and that reason might be nothing more than that someone bought it, loving The Most Beautiful Girl In The World and thinking the rest of the album would be like that. Some people hate albums that are 'eclectic'.

No album is truthfully any more "superior" than any other. It all just depends on what you like.

IMO, there's no real comparison between TGE and The Black Album because they are just worlds apart, musically and otherwise. TGE is an elitist, super polished collection of radio ready jewels to be thrown before swine and TBA is a dirty-sounding, sweaty, slice of insanity that sounds like it was birthed and basted in the midst of a sex party gone wrong.
