Prince Sample Track on NoneSuch website - A Case of You

Prince is featured on a sample track of Joni Mitchell's, A Case of You.

Does anyone know if this is a new version? Or has Prince recorded this same version somewhere before? Thanks!

OK. The mix sounds a little different to me, but I'll take your word for it.

It sounded different to me at first too. But I haven't listened to that CD in forever, so that would make sense.
BTW, I got that CD in the box set, from a record store, at its' release- not the club. I did acquire a second one from the club somehow- but cannot for the life of me recall why/how. Were they giving it out at shows? Can someone please refresh my memory- thanks biggrin

The ONA Piano CD was part of the club benefits and we also got it free with the ONA Live box set from the club. I'd be surprised if it made it to stores.

But did they send it to us, or give it out at shows? And, yes, I did get my first one in the ONA box set from the local record store- that much I remember for sure. Same store where years earlier I picked up Crystal Ball while some others were waiting for it in the mail. biggrin

The only way I might be mistaken is that I had the copy from the club first, then got my ONA box set, with it again, at later date but definitely from the record store.

Yes, it was originally released through the club, and then soon after it went into retail. I saw it back in 2002, and I do believe that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland still has it on sale in its music store. I have been told that the Rock Hall music store keeps every major release by its hall of fame members in its special "hall of fame" section of the store.

Oh, I listened to the January 2002 NPGMC release a few days ago, from a previous thread about the songs "Breathe" and "Madrid 2 Chicago." Then over the weekend I pulled out the ONA solo piano and voice CD and played it over the weekend.

Prince's rendition of "A Case of You" / "A Case of U" really packs a punch both vocally and the way it is performed with heavy paino. Joni, I know, is proud to have his version on her tribute CD. But you know, up until right now, when I accessed the tribute web site, I had never heard Joni's original acoustic guitar version. Both are very distinct in thier own right, but Prince's version really packs a punch.

I never care for Prince's version of that song... at least not this particular recording of it, especially the way the first verse is just butchered out of the song.

Of course, I'm not impressed with most of the Tribute CD either. You know how great artists can take an ordinary song and make it sound wonderful? Well, this CD takes amazing songs and makes them sound ordinary. confused There's only about 3-4 tracks that I would consider decent interpretations.

I think this interpretation of Prince is wonderful and underrated, as is this whole one nite alone piano cd. I have a friend who is just crazy about this song, who is not a Prince fan but now at least appreciates Prince more then before..

Well, it's just a matter of taste. I don't think it can hold a candle to the original so that's rather disappointing. I haven't heard the 1983 performance of it, however. Something tells me Prince would have handled it better then.

Bjork is so smart, brilliant and life-affirming. I love her commentary on the link. Thanks for posting.
